Yeah, that's been brought up a couple of times on here, that's why dodge has a plastic bumper cover over them now....arrrgghh!! I had mine painted three times in about 2 years (it's a 99 too), now they won't do it anymore. In the fall time I took it off and shot it with a couple coats of high gloss black tremclad rust paint, it's been holding up REALLY well!! That's about all I can say about it...

I have a '97 with a rusty bumper and no matter how many times I sanded and painted it would not last. My bumper rusted from the inside out beneath the paint after 1-1/2 years. The dealer would not cover it under warranty. Looks like sh!t. Best advice is to buy an aftermarket bumper or get a newer bumper with the plastic cover. Really piss poor for a 6 year old truck.

Here is a picture from a year ago, the bumper has no paint left on it now.

wow mines not even like that at all its just starting in the conners. i thin the problem is that they dont prime the bumper before they paint it. try "por 15" the stuff is tuff as hell. u just have to paint over it with another paint cuase uv rays hurt it and that about the only thing. how much do aftermarket bumpers cost and wont the plactic one be really weak?

My bumper is way beyond POR. By the time the rust comes through the paint it is deep within the metal. You would need a grinder and bondo to fix mine and the metal would be paper thin in spots afterwards. The aftermarket bumpers are about $50 plus $60 shipping. They are on Ebay most of the time. The plastic bumpers are just a cover, not sure what the bumper portion looks like (probably not a standard bumper).

I have a 1997 dakota that had a rusty bumper also. The dealer fixed it 3 times and it always rusted again....

Problem turned out to be that the manufacurer does not use primer for whatever reason on the bumpers and the paint just would not stick.

After the warranty ran out, I eventually had to remove the bumper, sand blast it, prime it, and paint it. That was a few years ago and about $150 later, but it's been fine ever since.
