Yesterday I was driving afer I got done 4 wheeling and noticed when I gave my truck some gas, I didnt really move forward but my engine reved almost as if it were in neutral. It did this until it hit around 45 mph when the O/D kicked in I think and afetr that it did the same thing everytime I had to stop at a light or something. It doesnt do it all the time now but could it have anything to do with the exaust leak I have or could it be the tranny? Now I also notice the small rattle I had when I gave the truck some gas is now a bigger rattle that is there all the time. It kind of sounds like my exaust, please help!!!!

If you have a stick, it sounds like your clutch is slipping and youll need to get a new one. If it's an auto, it's most likely your tranny. I've never heard of an exhaust problem causing your truck to slip out of gear like that. Best bet is to take it into a shop and get it looked out. Sorry man.
P.S. what year is your truck?

Check your catalytic converter, Dakota's are notorious for cat problems! I have been through 5 in 3 years! They get really annoying sounding and very loud!!!

98sprt. No kidding about the cat's. My 98 4x4's baffle broke and clogged the cat. I couldn't generate enough power to shift into 4th. I thought something big had happened.

It took a whole month for them to get a new one in and repair it. They gave me a brand new Caravan and when I brought it back it has around 1,300 miles on it. those Caravan's are sweet but they just don't turn any heads like a Dak. LOL

Jeffster, how can I tell if its my cat? The newer, louder rattle I hear and the fact that it wouldnt shift gears leads me to think it may be the cat.

Sound like it's the Cat to me. Mine also had a rattling sound leading up to the all out faliure. This rattling was well before the baffle broke. I had no idea the rattling was from the cat, it sounded like it was an internal engine or transmission noise and was surprised when they told me that problem was also the Cat.

When the Cat is cold try hitting it with your fist and listemn for something lose. Short of that I can't see how else you could tell short of removing it.

I tied hitting it with my fist but it is mounted pretty solidly and I coulnt move it to rattle anything inside. I did hear a light sort of rattling but I couldnt really tell. Is it supposed to be a loud rattle?

Don't know Andrew. Mine was under warranty so I didn't actually have to diagnose the problem myself, just trying to offer some common sense solutions. I am no mechanic but did manage to change the clutch on my 98 V8 4x4 and that's no small task.I learned to fix things myself out of nessecity for I can't afford to pay someone to do it. My last truck was also a 4x4 and I am almost certain 4x4ing is what jarred it loose and started the problem. I was working it pretty hard and was afraid something major was damadged but it was just the Cat.

just have a high flow cat put in at any exhaust shop! Because with dakota history, I am positive that is what it is! Another way to find out is have someone start your truck and rev it up while you listen close to the cat an you should here that is where the noise is coming from!

If it's not your cat, check your ignition coil(s). Your symptoms seem like your ignition coil may be going out, among a million other things, but something I've experienced.

Good luck.

I think it may be the cat. On the way home today it did it again and it didnt really sound like the engine reving too much. Also, I could feel the auto tranny shift like normal and the sound was like some thing was wrong somewhere in the exaust. When I hit around 45 or so, the sound dies away and its back to normal but with a rattle somewhere on the underside of the truck, I suspect in the exaust sinse it sounds like a light metallic rattle.

Yep. It will only do it at certain rpms. Mine I think did it iddling or just a little above idle speed through about 2500 rpm if I remember right. I will bet an after market high flow will be cheaper if you have no warranty left.

now that you put new manifold gaskets on (sealed the leak) before the cat and its worse now it must be the cat!because before you sealed the system some of the pressure went out the gaskets now there is no where for it to go.so after reading jeffsters and 98 sport id say its the cat

Hold on just one damn second, what in the hell are you talking about? Now this is either an imposter pretending to be durtydog or its the real durtydog who forgot to take his medication. Now, just where in the off topic forum have I been bashing you "rednecks"? Let me clarify, first off, I drive a dodge by choice, because the name at least still stands for one of the three best car companies out there and they are all from the land I love, America. Second, I doubt you will find anyone more willing to stand up for the greatest country in the world and is more patriotic, bordering.......well, I wont get myself into any trouble here so we'll just leave that alone. And I guess the fact that even though people make fun, I put in a gun rack in my dodge the same week I bougt the truck, play country music so loud while driving my truck, the kids blasting their rap music roll up their windows(not my fault they dont know what good music is), spend my friday and saturday nights sitting on the porch with all my "redneck" freinds wearing cowboy hats, pounding Budweiser(the greatest beer ever), blasting ol' Hank, Alan, George, Charlie, and all the rest of that good shit(greatest music ever) until we get drunk enough to go find someone sober enough to take us fishing at 1:00a.m. in the summer. In fact, I spent the better part of last night giggin frogs and crawdads with a belly full of Budweiser, so dont tell me I aint REDNECK.
