Subject: 4wd Shift Problem IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1987 4x4 Dakota Auto Tranny with the "New Process" model 207 transfer case. It "seems" to shift into 4wheel high just fine. When I try to shift from 4high to 4 low, it grinds the gears and makes an awfull sound like metal in a blender. I've read the insruction on the visor in the cab but I shift it to nuetral like it says to shift to 4low and I'm scared to jam into gear afraid it might screw something up. Is it the way I'm trying to shift the gear or defective parts. If so, what should I do. And just a few months ago I spent $1200 on rebuilt tran., and brand new front drive axles. With having this work done I think it should be able to shift into 4wd whenever I want it to. Please tell me what y'all think about it.

Message: My 93 4x4 does the same thing. When I try to shift into 4lo it "hangs up" in neutral or somewhere around neutral. Then I must shut the truck off amd the shifter shifts into 4lo no problem. When I star the truck again, I can see the the 4x4 light near the shifter on the floor is off. Then I push the shifter forward about 1-2" or until it falls into a spot, I can hear the gears grind for a second and then I got 4lo. It takes longer to explain it than to do it and I have learned to live with it.
