Message: Mine have been off since my truck had 20,000 miles, and no problem, nothing melted. Remove the plug and grab the shield with some pliers. Twist and pull hard. It took some elbow grease and little cussing to get mine off.
I used Borg warner wires from Pep Boys. they work fine, and I think they were around $35.

Message: Yes you can get rid of them. No problems with aftermarket wires and headers here. I think the shields make changing the plugs a bit more of a PITA plus they help collect dirt around the plug.

Message: DON'T remove your plugs before you take out the shields, if you do all the crap around them is going to fall in the hole. just pull the wire off one at a time, use some needle nose pliers and grab the shield where the split is, now turn it a little bit, then just keep wiggling the shield back and forth while pulling on it.... i just did mine saturday and even w/70,000 miles on the truck it took all of 15 min to get the shields out....once they are out ......pitch them in the trash........
