Subject: Engine break in??

I just picked up my '01 Quad Cab 4.7, 4x4 last night. I love it! Is there any such thing as a break in period for these trucks? I know in the 'old days' there were but i have heard that a break in period is not nessesary. I have been really gentle on the throttle as i only have 30 miles on it. Whats the deal??

The "break in" philosophy has caused many debates. Many say yes and many say no. My advice would be to drive the truck as you would normally drive. Don't baby it but just the same don't run the hell out of it. I would change the oil and filter at 1000 and use whatever products you wish to use for the life of the engine. As I've mentioned many times on these boards before I switched to Mobil 1 10W-30 and Mobil 1 filter #M1-301 at 500 miles on my 2000 4.7 and it has been fine.

KJ got right.

I did it differently. I drove it 500 easy miles. Then changed the oil and filter to 5w-30 mobil 1 and a K&N filter. The mobil 1 filter is as good or better than the K&N.

The manufacture list the 5w-30 for all but the most extreem conditions.

Engines are manufactured differently than they were years ago. The blocks are cleaned better too. I've broke them in rough and I've broke them in easy. I saw no difference in the long haul. I would suggest that you do what you are comfortable with. Since new motors are cleaner than they used to be the dealers are no longer suggesting an early oil change but just like the other guys, I change mine at 500 to a 1000. At that point I use whatever I want (which is synthetic - personal preference).

If it's a 5 speed you should give the cluth a few couple hundred miles to seat it self. I might finnaly get mine this weekend and will give it about 200 miles before I dump the clutch. I average about 27,000 miles a clutch.. he he he

I will replace it with a Center Force dual friction and hope for 30,000 miles. Ha ha ha.

Your owners manual say that you should keep it under 65 Mph for the first 350 miles and not to accelerate hard or race the engine. The engines today come from the factory with a slight taper to the rings and are chromoly plated to speed up breakin. The rear diff. is a different story. Most rear ends require about 500 miles to finish the lapping process and stress relieve them. Their is a book by Robert Sikorshy tiled "DRIVE IT FOREVER" he states that most of the accelerated large engine damageing particle dureing breakin will be generated by 600 miles. This is the most important time to change your oil (600 miles). If you just follow your seveer maintence schueld you will greatly extend the life of your engine. If you have to choose between an expensive synthetic oil or an expensive synthetic oil filter buy the expensive oil filter and use the regular oil. It would of course be best to use booth.

Sounds good I will hold off on dumping the clutch for the first 500 miles.
