Subject: info on 4WD front shaft

my dakota w/5.2L, automatic trans, 4WD. IS the front drive shaft supposed to be spinning all the time. Unlike other 4WD drive trucks ive had when i try to turn the shaft by hand when in 2WD it wont turn. IS that normal.

Yes it is normal. Just hope you never have to replace it. they are known for the grease in the yoke joint to dry up and score up the needle bearings.

Keep an eye on the CV joint going into the transfer case. The boot on mine broke and it cost me almost $400.00 to replace the front drive shaft. The boot has a tendency to break, all the grease leaks out, and..........no more bearing.

Has anyone found a source for the boot that encloses the CV joint on the transfer case end of the front driveshaft? The dealer ship is saying that it is sold as an entire assy for ~$325. That seems ridiculous to me...

Any info would be very useful. I'm calling the junkyards next...

My 1988 Dakota front shaft spins freely when in 2wd. There must be a differnt set up for the older Daks.
