Subject: Late rear bumper fit early trucks? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 94 Dakota and need a replacement rear bumper. Having trouble finding a nice used chrome one. Can a late model bumper be modified to fit early Dakotas? Is the frame wider/narrower? Some modifications are ok, I have a welder, drill press, etc. There are a lot more late model bumpers around from people that have installed roll pans.
I searched the archives and didn't find anything on this subject.
TIA,

Message: I think youre gonna have more of a problem on the width of the bumper. The bracketry isnt hard to modify but I think the new dakotas are 3 inches wider than the old style dakotas

Message: Thanks. I'll do some measuring before I jump into anything.
New one for a 1994 is $444 from the dealer. Only response to my want ad (granted I just placed it Friday) was $375 plus shipping for a used one. Ain't gonna happen. If I could find a very nice one for $200, I'd probably do it. Still also contemplating making a double square tube one myself... total cost would be a heck of a lot less!

Message: You can use a gen 1 bumper if you want. it mounts on the opposite side of the frame. I have one on my 1993 and you cant tell the difference. It was chrome but i had to paint it black. Cost was $85 from a junk yard across the street from Shea Stadium in Queens NY. Those are some heavy duty bumpers. They hold up well against multiple garbage trucks.

Message: You might check a body shop sheet metal supplier for a GenII bumper at a reasonable price. Those things were so thick it wouldn't matter if it was OEM or not. The inside bed measurements of a GenII and GenIII are identical, so bumper width shouldn't be a problem. Take some measurements of the total width and the bracket spacing; you may be in luck. I had a '92 with 4" holes outboard of the brackets for through-the-bumper exhaust.
