Subject: 4.7 oil filter IP: Logged
Message: I want to use a bigger oil filter on my dakota. The stock one is prety stubby. i jsut want one with bigger volume but still to fit on there correctly. Anyone know of a different oil filter that fits on the threads and seals correctly but has more volume inside. All i seem to find is the remote oil filters systems for dual filters that cost a arm and a leg
thanx

Message: I've done this trick for years on other Mopars, even the old 2.2 4-cyl. You can find a cross-reference for your favorite, but basically what you are looking for is a 1970's style 318 filter. It has the same threads, mounting gasket ring, but is about 50% bigger. Match up a Autolite 20, Fram 43, or Pennzoil 34 to find your favorite.

Message: The filter that the other guy mentioned does not have the anti drain back valve. I you want a bigger filter you may want to see if the Fram PH8A or equivalent will fit on your Dakota

Message: If you want a good filter at a good price get the MotorCraft FL1A. Their are better filter but you can not find a better deal off the shelf. It is the same Puralator Pure one filter element that Puralator charges $6-$10 for in a slightly cheaper metal can. So you are getting a premium filter for $2.57 cents!! You can get them at Walmart! If you want even better get the Baldwin B2HPG for $6 it will smoke the $10 filters!!! For anything better you will need to go the bypass filter route!

Message: The stock one is plenty big enough for that engine if
you are using synthetic oil (I use the AMSOIL).

I couldnt justify an oil change beyond 30 bucks. I hate black oil!

Message: 10-4 on the Fram, texastodd. I haven't used them myself in about 10 years. I just mentioned #43 for a sizing reference.
