Message: Thanks for the info, I'm a little concerned about voiding any factory warantee's at least until I'm done paying for it. I was considering an air intake and dual exhaust for it in the meantime. I have had a wierd thing happen to me on two occasions. I live in New England and we've gotton a lot of snow this year. between snows the roads are clear and I'm in 2WD most of the time, I've had the 2WD switch to 4WD going over a bump. Forunately it's been at slow speeds. I know it's shift on the fy but I would hate to have it shift into 4WD at highway speeds because of a bump in the road and blow out the transfer case or something. It's probably just a sensitive switch but I haven't been able to get it back to the dealer.

Message: Dave, you're in luck!
The HO cams ARE factory cams, for a jeep that is.
The dealer has NO way of knowing they've been installed! NO computer, etc, can tell they're in there, just more low end tq. Try the dealer in wakefield R.I., that's where I got mine from. The price is going up, still pretty cheap though.
And Dave,
If you wnat to keep any low end tq,
DON'T mess with your exhaust on the 4.7, without LOTS of other mods, you put duals on that puppy, you'll lose tq, and gain zero HP.
air intake tubes don't void a warranty.

Message: Thanks Todd,
I was wondering if they were a Jeep item. Why didn't they include them in the Dakota 4.7 anyway?
Did you install them and if so is it difficult? It looks pretty crowded in there, the last car I did any extensive engine work on was a 69 Firebird and that was back in the early 90's. Those old v8's were a lot more simple.

Message: Dave,
The HO components, are stock on a 4.7 HO engine that's an option in the Grand Cherokee. They never offered it on a Dodge product-yet anyway. It actually has MANY things different, but the cams and intake are relatively easy to install, with dyno proven gains on the regular 4.7 engine.
Many people have both the cams and intake installed here. I'm about to do the intake in a few weeks, already have done the cams with a friend in my garage. I learned of all of this from this site, and at the time, they were so inexpensive, ($110 for the pair) that it was a no brainer. NOt to be eliteist at all, but do a search on this site on things like 'ho cam install', etc., and you'll get a great deal of instructions, tips, places to get them, etc.
The clearance is pretty tight, if so many others hadn't done them before me, I'd have thought that it couldn't be done without moving the motor mounts for clearance. I installed them, it's possible, not too bad actually. You'll get plenty of tips on the install from the old posts, clearance tips, etc.
the 'old' v8's you speak of are probably the single cam, pushrod style. the 4.7 is a SOHC (single overhead cam), so theres two cams total. It's really a high tech engine, utilizing inter cam oiling ports, etc. (the cams are hollow!) The're also overhead cams, so the entire intake manifold, etc., stays in place, just remove the valve covers, and they they are, no push rods.
Let's give back this thread. e-mail me with any other questions, etc.

Message: Al, Oh Al,
I was doing a search for my HO intake install, and stumbled on another MPG post I think you'd be interested in.
Still waiting for you to apologize, like any descent man would.

You DO NOT need the platinum plugs mopar2ya, UNLESS you are swapping the heads as well. To do that, you'd really need the Jeep HO PCM as well, but we all know that's not going to work with our truck (not easily, anyway). I have the HO Cams and HO Intake as well as a 70mm TB, true duals, and soon the KB Optimizer II. I do run premium gas even though it's not needed. I've never had any type of pinging at any throttle or load in any atmospheric conditions. Oh yeah, I also use the Autolite 3923 plugs. I have plenty of power, good mileage (16.5 city and 21 hwy at 90 MPH sustained), and not one drivability issue. Take from that what you will.
un huh, and I'm the you who's a liar and doesn't know what I'm talking about?

Message: Ok sorry Todd maybe you are not a liar, but my overhead computer says 14.5 average mpg. If I really try to do better I can get 15. I do think you are very helpful on these message boards, but you did tell the guy that you get very good milage with your truck. Which leads them to believe that they would get similar milage. I decided that they need to know the truth, sorry if I pizzed you off.
A few things that could make up the difference I did notice that the sticker in the door jam says that my rims are 15 inches when in fact they are 16" upgraded. Im assuming that this makes no difference on the computer. And I like to run my tires below reccomended psi for the comfort, this doesnt help milage one bit. Also my battery is HUGE, this thing probly weighs 100 pounds. Also the 4x4 sits higher than a 4x2 which hurts milage. And my truck is bone stock, no additions whatsoever except Mobil1 oil and filter.

Message: Al,
no problem.
Please keep in mind that the overhead computer is as estimate, monitoring things like vacuum, rpm, speed, etc. I don't even have one, I fill up and divide using my trip meter.
I also have the tire and handling-16in wheels, trailer towing, which comes with the HD service group-amoung other things-the HUGE battery, etc.
The 4x4, etc, you're not going to get as good as MPG.
And when not accellerating quickly alot (which is SO fun with this engine), my manual tranny and 3.55 rear, etc., I DO get that mileage.
Have a good one AL

Message: Thanks for all comments guys. I ddn't end up buying a Dakota mostly because of the stink attitude I got from the dealers here (Hawaii). They are used to having a captive audience, so I went with a different place that was willing to give me an invoice price on the vehicle.
I was very close to ordering a QC under the friends program from a mainland dealer, but the shipping cost was what prevented me.
Thanks again and I'm sure some other future owner will find this thread helpful. Some of u "vets" should bookmark it for later reading.
Aloha,
Mitch
