Subject: low profile load rating IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2001 4.7l cc with a full hotckis suspension and i just bought 18" mille miglia wheels with pirelli scorpion 255/55/18s. the tires in the front rub over medium bumps they hit the metal fender lip. I have slightly bent the fender lip up but thats not close to good enough. I bought the wheels and tires from tirerack.com. I realize the best thing is to probably get a lower profile tire a 45 series which they sell but when i told them it was for a dakota, they said the load rating was too low and there was a good chance of blowout. I know there are guys on this site with 18" and 20" wheels with drops and low profile tires, Is there really a safety risk?

Message: it CAN blowout, but probably will not. im running a 255/35/20, and its overloaded, but i have never had a problem. i know a guy with a 285/30/22 on a navigator, and he has had no problems.
you would probably have to be going 100mph, slam on the breaks, and turn to put so much of a load on one tire (either the LF or RF, depending on which way you turn) that it blows.
if you are planning on running a 255/45R18, i would not worry about it.
