Hemikota Dodge Dakota JOIN HERE 4/11/2006 14:05:10	Subject: RE: Tacoma or Dakota IP: Logged Message: well the 4.7 dakota from what ive seen and heard is that the HP and TQ ar 235hp and 330 fpds torque. my truck has proven this several times on the street and track. i had gibson headers full racing exhaust, low resistance cat, throtal body spacer, and a k&n cool air intake with a tornado air thing in it too. i estimate the power to be somewhere around 280 to 300 hp and anywhere from 350 to 380 ft p torque i have stopmed on honda civics and 1.8 eclipes w/turbo ive taken out several mustang GT's and i have already dropped a 5.7 hemi into fabricated motor mounts in my truck and the 5.7 i have now makes a hell over450hp and 450torque so i dare anyone to race me for pinx and underestimate my truck,lol

I have to agree, the Toyota is a solid truck but I looked with an open mind when I bought my Dakota. Here's what I found. Dakota had more and nicer options. MosT VERY USaBLE on those cross country trips. The Dakota had far more comfort again great for trips. Even 2 hour trips. The Dakota had a far smother ride to offer. Toyotas are choppy feeling I also liked the Dakota heater-A/C better. This was a real plus for me living in Montana. Mine is a 99 4X4 CC with the 5.2 engine. Bought it new.This is by far the most reliable truck I ever owned. Grant you there are a lot of guys in this forum that have there share of problems. These forums attract the bad far more then the good. Not to be cutting anybody down but if you read in here enough not a day goes buy your reading about last nights race and how much rubber van be burnt off the tires. amongst other things these same guys are (AS A RULE) the ones with trany problems. Yes lots of us treat pur trucks with respect and still have the ocational trany problem but so does toyota. My automatic is as sweet as it can be. I used to be a standard trany guy all the way for years and years till I discovered how great an automatic was. I've never did any rock crawling with my dakota but I did with my prior automobiles that I built up for just that purpose. What a great advantage the automatic delivers you and your kidneys apreciate it a lot. Anyway,You can haul more with the Dakota also. I have driven my Dakota to the coast several times.800+ miles one way and I do this in comfort in my Dakota I have owned 3 Toyotas in the past. Good reliable truck but the ride was a killer. I also liked the feel of the steering in the Dakota much better. Has a real solid controled feeling. The bottom line for YOU is simple. You got to do what you feel is the best choice for you and not for us. Either truck is a good investment in my mind. I'll most likely get beat on by the racers but that's ok. They'll come to my side when there 25,000 dollar truck comes ungluied and there lookng at laying out another 25,000 to replace it. Way to many young inexperianced drivers racing on the streets and argue it's ok. One of them or more is going to kill some poor person or small child rushing out into the street one day. No doubt they will reason that person or child had no business being there. Heard it all to many times in my life.Just my valued opinions here. So many problems .... So little time

Anyway, the answer is...Parts. So my suggestion, a variation of all the above, is to figure what you'll use the truck for and buy based on what best fills that need. By the way, the other reason is Land Rovers are way better off road.

Auto-trannies are great if you take care of them. Sticks are a no brainer I am told. Toyotas are very handy to have as a vehicle. I grew up in Nothern California. Construction like persons drive Fords (heavy construction) here, built strong. For trails and baja trips the Toyota is a better vehicle. Dodge Dakotas and Rams here are most often bought for looks and cabin size. I think each one fits a 'bill.' I am looking into buying a new truck and have looked around on the net. Toyota has a good reputation in reliability, but no real options going on and kinda middle grade price range. The Ford Ranger is cheap and has options. The Dakota is a good all around truck if you got the V8, but in my experience they are high on maintenance. Personally I would go with a stick if I was to try to keep it for over 200K. You don't have to flush every 25K or whatever.

Toyota is a little pricey and not a lot to offer for options. Reliability is their token. Ford Ranger is sweet in terms of options. They have like 5 or 6 base models and affordable on some of them. Dakotas are in a class of their own in my opinion, but lack the dependability status. If dakotas were known for their exceptional quality they would beat the comp. by far. Until then get the warranty. ;-)
toolfan GenIII 4/13/2006 19:25:24	RE: Tacoma or Dakota IP: Logged Message: i have owned both a Toyota and my Dakota now. both have the same miles. i have replace more on the Dakota but that's only because i plan on keeping it. the Toyota was great but in need of an engine at only 150k miles. the manual on the japanese trucks are not that tough, compared to the manual in the Dakotas. my auto in my Dakota with 155k miles on it shifts damn good!! i've beat on both trucks and both survived. i will say that the Dakota will problem make it to 200k miles before anything in the drive-train gives out. the Toyota would have choked much sooner. i know 3 other people with a toyota pickup trucks that have the 22re and have had to replace the heads on them around 100k-160k miles. my Dakota has been jumped, drag raced and off-roaded daily and is still running strong at 155,000 miles so for you saying that the build quality isn't there you're wrong.

The V6s for early 90s had a recall as some one mentioned earlier. Their head gaskets would blow too. Wonder why no one pursued Toyota on that one. My buddies early 90s 4-cyc went out around 140K just like you mentioned.
toolfan GenIII 4/13/2006 23:00:43	RE: Tacoma or Dakota IP: Logged Message: those 22re motors had a head problem and most people replaced them around that time. lot of times the timing belt would break destroying the head too. i think they didn't recall them because it happen over a 100k miles so at that point it could just be owners fault in not having the timing belt changed out at the 60k mile mark, my motor also burn 2qts of oil a day at one put right before selling it! the suspension on the toyotas were real tough back than. they had a fully boxed frame for ever on the toyota and some other japenese trucks, funny that ford was making a big deal about there new F-150s fully boxed frame, the durango also has had a fully boxed frame thats why it can tow more than a dakota. i do take the handling of the dakota over the toyota too. these dakotas handle amazingly well for there size and weight. i'm amazed no one has stated that. take mine through the canyons often and it flys through there, enough so that i got a ticket for doing 75 in a 55. :D

Even the slightly smaller than full size Tundra I made the decision to go with the Dakota 4.7 QC, Ive had it for a year and not 1 problem, everything is great! Cant wait for the aftermarket to catch up with the 3rd Gen Dakotas. Reasons why I dididnt go with the Tacoma, -Its a smaller truck, -Cost of parts, -If your going to do any towing the tacoma only has a V6. One of the Major reasons I didint get it is the area I live in, southwestern ontario. I went to the local Toyota dealer and they didint even have one on the lot to test drive. I asked "why not". The dealer told me they did before buy coulden't sell the trucks. So if I wanted one I would have to order without test driving it. I did months of reasearch before giving anybody 35K, finally I ordered it from Dodge, my name on the window sticker. Also, I did the reasearch about the resale value, and its not significantly higher than the Dakota.. and with the higher cost of parts over the life of the vehicle your going to come out the same in the end. Nissan tried to sell me on this. The people at the Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep dealership were great, they handed me the keys to the truck (I was only 22 at the time) and said, bring it back before closing. I took the thing on a test drive, all afternoon.. brought it to all by buddies houses asking what they thought. 2005 Dodge Dakota 4.7L QC SLT Plus

If you ever expect to get anything out of it when it is time to sell go for the Tacoma. I love my Dakota but have never had a vehicle that has depreciated so fast.
