Subject: Pirelli Sorpion A/T???

Message:
Hey gang,

I'm looking for new tires...got stuck in some of that 'it-was-warm-today-and-now-there's-an-inch-of-ice-atop-the-foot-of-snow'...you guys in the north know what I'm talking about...anyway

The balding stock Goodyears aren't cutting it anymore (after 56,000 miles) and I'm looking for some good 31x10.5x15 that won't break the bank.

Pirelli Sorpion A/T are at tirerack.com for $81 per tire, which seems like a great price...anyone have any opinions on these, or any others?

Sorry about the long post...thanks for the help.

Ryan

I put a set of these on in november and overall I'm pleased. 2 downsides though; they are rather noisy when going around turns with my limited slip diff. The shop that put them on also said they need to be rotated every 3000 miles or cupping would occur.

Thanks DaveR for the feedback! Anyone else?

Anyone else know about the kind of snow I'm talking about too? The kind you can walk on top of, but then if the ice is a little too thin you fall through...I used to have a ball with that stuff when I was a kid...

I dig 'em. Lower the pressure a tad in snow, and it seems to give off confidence on the road.
They do cup rather easy, and are noisy, especially if your alignment is off. Get the tires, get an alignment and you would be happy imo

When you guys talk about cupping, can you be more specific as to what causes this? What type of driving conditions should I avoid if I buy these tires? I do both highway and light off-roading/mudding.

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it. I'll definately get an alignment when I have the tires put on.

You guys rock!

Hey Ryan, thought I would just give you another option to look at. I bought some BF Goodrich A/T last week and are the same size your looking for, I am pretty happy with them and they do very well in the snow and ice on the roads where I am so far.. there a great looking tire too, not sure what the price is in tire rack for them though----> just was told that BF G's tires are one of the best for your money if your looking for an A/T tire.

very quite as well, at any speed.

i looked at the scorpion's and the bfg's and this is what i think of them. the scorpions are just as quite, weigh less, look as good and have a more agressive tread design. i am very pleased with them. the bfg are a great tire, much stronger in every aspect but depending on what size engine you have and your rear gear ratio the lighter pirellis are the way to go as far as all around value. go to tirerack.com and compare the two. very much alike but with a lowrer price

I just bought a set of 31 x10.5 Bridgestone Dueller A/T Revo's . Tire Rack has good reviews and I liked the tread pattern.
I'll be up in the white stuff around Georgian Bay next week on some old logging roads . We'll put them to a test then. They're way better than the Goodyear Wrangler RTS's they replaced but then again running on 4 bald flats would probably be better. Those things should be outlawed.
Think about spending the extra bucks. $200.00 more on tires is better than the cheapest repair bill on your truck if you hit something or someone because you cheaped out on tires.

The BFG's have a severe snow rating as well for those of you up there :). I have a good friend that had the Pirellis on his Durango, they were good, but they didn't last long at all, maybe 35k miles with frequent rotations. I have about 23k on my BFG's, and they're about half worn. My situation was worse, I have a '01 with the 265-70-16. BFG was the only one that had a true A/T, and more than a regular passenger car (aka 4ply) rating since I tow a trailer sometimes. The 3 ply sidewall helps with handling as well as 4x4ing. I even think they're a bit overkill, my size is 8 ply rated!!
