Message: I agree. My mileage sucks too but it's better than my 97 5.2 4x4 was. Basically it's a very inefficient engine design. Keep in mind it still takes x amount of power to accelerate a Dakota to any given speed and maintain that speed against the resistance of the wind so there comes a point where engine size becomes irrelevant and efficiency becomes more important.
Any way, alot of it depends on driving style. These engines really suck back gas on acceleration so watch the pedal to the metal launches. POull away from stops smoothly and gradualy. Do the speed limit on highways. Switching to larger diameter tires lowers the effective f/d ratio and that helps. Sure you won't do the 1/4m in 14secs but who cares? I put on 31x10.5/15 on my 2001 (2000 rims) and my truck still cocts the same to operate it ($/m) as it did when I bought it and gas was way less than it is now.
Try switching to synthetic oil in the engine and diff and make sure the air filter is clean and watch the crud build up in the t/b and manifold.
Other than that I don't know what to do.

Message: shannon,
not to be an a-hole, but,
You've got a 4x4 truck. You may have thought that by getting a v6, you were actually going to be more economical, right?
However, you're not driving a mid-sized car, you have a heavy 4x4 truck.
truck aerodynamics = pretty much a brick
4x4 = more hp needed/ LESS efficient
v6 = underpowered engine, that has to work alot harder to drive that 4x4 truck
And you're wondering why you get poor mileage?
Little things like air filters, intakes, sometimes exhaust system will help- a little.
That v6 (3.9), is NOT an economical, efficient engine to begin with, now it's trying to push a 4x4 97 year model truck.
