Subject: rpm fluctuates sometimes when cruising?? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 dakota cc 4.7 auto i noticed when i took a trip to tampa couple weeks ago on the interstate that my rpm would fluctuate sometimes like i would be crusing at about 2000 and it would like jump to 2300 or so then go back down and it would do it with ac on or off cruise control on or off it seem to be in teh transmission or convertor but i only noticed it then i dont notice any other problems, i am planning on changine my trany fluid and filter pretty soon not sure if the would be the problem or not. Any idea or sugesting on the problem and any tips on doing a complete trans fluid exchange without a exchange machine?
Thanks

Message: Dude, i can almost gurantee its your TPS sensor. My 1999 3.9 auto did the same thing. Replaced the sensor and that was that.

Message: If the computer is getting an intermitent sigal from the tps while cruising, it could cause the torque converter to keep locking and unlocking....when mine was doing that, thought it had to be the tranny too....but i was low on cash and figured i'd try the tps and it worked....theres a bunch of other people that have had the same problem.....but without experiencing what your truck is doing myself, i wouldn't know for sure if thats what it is......theres some other posts on this site about this......try using the search mode to find em for more info......

Message: Are you guys sure its not just kicking in and out of overdrive??? I have a 00 4.7 auto. I find the tranny looking for the right gear and under load will slip back and fourth, especially right around 100km or so???

Message: I am having the same problem, thought it might just be bad gas... but you all are saying that it may actually be something I need to have looked at? TPS? Do I need to take this somewhere or can I do it myself?

Message: TPS is most likely your problem. I've fixed a couple trucks for the same reason. Less than $40 at the dealer for a new one.

Message: but is the tps casue the trans to slip or conveter to slip casuse that is what this fells like the rpm cant change much when ur just crusing unless u drop down a gear i can pust the gas a little and it just slowy speeds up it dont jump 300 rpm real quick ??

Message: I'm pretty sure its your tps. Mine did that same 300 rpm "bumpig" stuff and when i'd give it just a bit more gas, it would go away. Its the torque converter locking and unlocking due to a bad signal from the tps, its not "slipping".

Message: Anyone else tried replacing the TPS for a transmission "slipping" at freeway speed? I have the exact same problem. Around 60 mph on flat roads the rpm will jump up 300-400 rpm periodiocally. Sounds like an easy fix. Where do I look to replace one? I've never done anything with sensors. Any advice on how to replace one would be a great help.
Thanks

Message: I haven't noticed mine fluctuating while driving BUT I do notice it doing it while sitting at a stop light ... especially with the A/C running. Seems like the truck is just wanting to go while I sit there waiting on the light to change.
TB has been thoroughly cleaned alond with the stock sensors. If you all think that the TPS sensor is my problem also then I'll change it also. I am just looking for educated opinions before dropping more cash on the truck right now. This was a very expensive month for me due to a $1000 deductible for hurricaine damage (I am in Florida), tires ($465 BFG's), Tranny Fluid/Filter/Flush & oil change ($209).

Message: TPS sensor. I had the same problem and it was a $40.00 fix and about 10 minutes. Left side under the air hat 2 phillips screws.
