I am looking for a truck and I seem to be drawn to the 4x4 Dak. My only ? is, what to get, the V6 or V8. I'm looking at 97-98 and leaning torwards a V6. From what I have read, they are more reliable. I will not be doing any heavy towing or off-roading, and I'm also considering MPG. Thanks!

i have the v6 and love it, make sure to get the 3.92 gears. i also came to the conclution while researching tha dakotas that the v6 last's longer, one guy on here said he had 366,000 mi. on his v6 with no rebuilds, and he never even had to have the engine opened up, just like 2 water pumps and a carb rebuild, and it still does'nt burn oil, heck he is still on the original clutch. i know 3 people that have the 4.7 and 2 of them had low miles and were well kept and they both blew. the third had to replace the oil pump at like 30k mi.

I had a v-6 dakota and never really thought much about the power for the first few months but the longer I had it the more I wanted the v-8. If you are worried about mpg, I should let you know that the v-6 in my 99' and my current 02' v-8 get almost identical gas millage. In the long run I am much happier with the v-8. Plus, there just arn't many mods out there for the sixes. I never got why people even messed with them. Get a v-8 if you really are worried about the power.
