Subject: How does this happen? IP: Logged
Message: The other day I had my power steering pump go out. I was driving and then all of a sudden I heard a small pop and then a few minutes later I saw and smelled smoke coming from the engine. I pulled over and looked under the hood and the reservoir that’s attached to the power steering pump and come apart from the pump. Has this happened to anyone? I replace the pump assembly yesterday. I bleed the system as much as possible and it seems to be running okay right now. Is there anything else I should be concerned about?

Message: Mine didn't smoke, but it went out at about 45K mi. It just developed an annoying squeak, like the bearing went out. It's been fine ever since I had it replaced. Was the smoke from the pulley locking up and the belt rubbing on it? If so, you may want to get a new belt.

Message: Did you install HO cams?
the pump has to be moved, or persuaded to move, and really can put alot of torque in the resevoir attachment. just a possible explanation

Message: No i don't have any HO cams, i just have a 3.9 V6. The smell of smoke was from the fluid hitting the exhaust & engine block. I just don't know why it did that, i've never heard of a pump literaly coming apart like that.
Texas Todd -- Yeah i've been playing waterpolo since i was 7. I grew up here in so cal (Diamond Bar, Anahiem area). I played D-1 at the Air Force Academy. I'm trying to get back into polo shape so i can play on a masters team only problem is that the closest one here is about an hour and a half away with out traffic. But i'm trying to get stationed in San Antonio (thats where my wife is currently stationed) and i'm looking at osme of the masters teams in that area too.

Message: How did you coach yourself? Seems hard to do. :)
The smoke may have been from fluid getting on the exhaust...

Message: Polo, That paint job looks great. I just have to know, did you paint the flames on a black truck or did you paint the rest of your silver truck black?

Message: bud green -- Thanks, my dad and i did the paint. He's a car painter. We did it at home, i first color sanded it to get the clear down, then we outlined the flames (that took about 5-7 hours) by hand. Then we masked everything off and sprayed the silver (from a 1999 Porsche). After that we took it to a spray booth rental place in Los Angeles and sprayed the clear. I then color sanded and re-sprayed the clear two more times to get rid of the edge that the flames left. We are going to redo the flames on the doors so they come out more almost to the end of the cab. The picture is bad b/c it was taken on an over cast day but the color is actually Deep Amythest (Dark Purple).
