Subject: 3rd brake light wiring IP: Logged
Message: I just purchased a century cap for my 01 CC. I need to wire the 3rd brake light and the overhead light. Should I splice into the tale light wiring for the brake light? If I do that the 3rd brake light will blink when I put the directional on. I checked the wiring out and there are 3 wires going to the bulb. 1 ground, 1 directional/brake and 1 parking light. I don't want the light to work with the directional.
Should I run a wire from the battey with an inline fuse for the overhead light?
Thanks

Message: Well, I see what you're saying, but when they installed my 'leer' cap, they used the wiring from the passenger side tailight. I don't know how they got around what you're saying though, sorry.
The overhead, is wired to my running lights, figuring I would probalby use it when I would turn my lights on, and it would always go off with the timer switch if left on.
I have a QC, with trailer towing, etc, and also,
I did have them wire a seperate 12V power outlet, placed on the ledge in the back, to run accessories, like my TV, fan, etc. I do have the 12V power outlet seperate on my dash, but this way I didn't have to run a wire thru the two slider windows from the cab to the back. I put a clear, inflatable 'boot' around the windows, to it's always sealed from the elements.-bouhgt it at the topper store where I bought the Leer.
Long story, ANYWAY-the 12v power outlet, is run off a seperate fused line to the battery, and can be on all the time.
Good luck on the 3rd brake light situation.
I'd call a dealer and ask them how they do it-they should be able to tell you easily.

Message: To my knowlege there is a small wiring harness available, ~$30 or so that you plug between the 2 tail light snad it does this for you. Why not jsut tap off the 3rd light that is there or off the brake switch itself?

Message: I guess I could always buy the wiring harness for a trailer and plug it into the tail light wiring. Then connect the other half to the cap. This would probably be the safest. I think the plug goes for $30.
I don't want to run a wire into the truck cab if i don't have to. How else would I tap into the stock 3rd break light?

Message: There is a pigtail near the front left wheel well that is labeled "aftermarket CHMBL" (or something like that, I cut off the label already for my cap). That wire is your center brake light for caps and such. Tap that wire and run it to your cap brake light positive 12V terminal. Now why Dodge put it near the FRONT of the truck when most people will be using it near the BACK of the truck, I will never know....

Message: I forgot to mention I have an '03 Dakota Quad. I am not sure if any other Dakotas have the CHMBL wire in the same location.

Message: doug4.7, There is no wiring labeled "aftermarket CHMBL" on my 01 cc. I looked all over the engine compartment. It must be something new.
I'll check out the spare tire locaton today.
Thanks

Message: There are a LOT of differences between the 01, 02, & 03 Dakotas internals so my CHMBL wire may be in a different place than yours. I wish mine had been near the spare tire. To find mine, I had to crawl under my truck just to the rear of the front left tire. On the underside of the truck (NOT in the engine compartment), there was this taped wire end with the "aftermarket CHMBL" label on it. I then spliced to that wire and ran it all the way to the back of the truck. My guess is Dodge put it in a different place for the 01 (again, why???). I would recommend getting a Dodge shop manual for your truck. I've made several electronic modifications to my truck and it would have been impossible without the shop manual. Trucks today are becoming more like computers on wheels.

Message: I have moved a truck cap from a 2002 Dakota Quad Cab to a 2004 Dakota Quad Cab and found the Centre High Mount Brake Light wire is located in a different spot in the 2002 truck compared to the 2004 truck. As indicated in prevous postings the white wire with a tan stripe is located to the RH side of the spare tire in the 2002 truck whereas in the 2004 it is located just back of the left front tire. In both cases there is a label on the wire marked CHMBL. Note that with both trucks the wire comes from the harness and comes to a dead end. Just splice into this wire and run the new wire back to the hot side of the cap brake light.

Message: Theres a little module the cap installers use that gets rid of the blinky blinky problem. It wires in between the wire off the brake light and the 3rd light on the cap. Mine hides behind the left tail light.
