check engine light ??
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 1997 4x4 318. The check engine light is on and the code is 12 as the batt. has been disconnected. First... will the code reappear as the light has come back on,It has not as yet. second... if I get down on it hard the light goes out but soon comes back on and third... the truck has a intermitting "bucking" miss, only sometimes. aside from this it seems to run fine. I'll be grateful for any help. Thanks

I recently put on some Sylvania Silverstars. They are brighter than stock. Especially when you have your brights on, but I don't really know if they were worth the $20 a bulb. If I was to do it again I would try some xenon bulbs like the ones you can get on ebay.

I put the xenons from got-xenon.com in my jeep this past fall, i love them.. bright as hell and the guy was fast and pretty cheap... do it off ebay and he can cut you some deals.. I save about $5 off the ebay price for the 3 sets shipped...

Gonna get some of these when the new kota comes in.... but first gotta order it...

The wiring diagram in the factory manual for the 2001 indicate the headlights are directly driven by a "driver" in the timer module. Is it wise to go with higher wattage bulbs knowing this? Or are you using an aftermarket relay to power the larger wattage bulbs?

Ive gone through two sets of the xenon bulbs off of ebay. I loved them both, they are really bright and I love the white light they produce. Well Each time I had them I had one blow of the two, now Im not for sure but think that problem is connected with turning on the brights. But needless to say, I dont use them anymore. Im using Sylvania "cool blue", but they look factory to me, lol.

EternalStrgth,

I have a 98 dakota ext cab and I have bought 2 sets of xenon 100w bulbs from ebay and have been very pleased with them. The only thing is after a short while my RIGHT dim light burns out. If I switch to brights it comes back on. I have noticed that the headlight doesn't project the same way my LEFT headlight does. It is less concentrated (more spread out).

Is this a bulb problem or a wiring problem?
Is this a common problem with anybody else?

Thanks

Thats a common problem with the cheap zenon bulbs. I used to run those a few years ago and they would always blow about every 3 months. One would go I would replace it, then the other would go....etc etc..
Everybody I've talked to has had the same problem...if you really want a true bright white light without replacing them all the time (not blue like the zenons) look into the kioto white beams or silvania silverstars, they cost a bit more but they last....
I've had koito's in my car for about 4 years now...love them....

I had some Sylvania Silverstars in my last car. They were definately brighter than any bulb I've ever tried.

They were so bright that sometimes oncoming cars would flash there brights at me thinking I had my brights on. That's why I haven't put any in the Dakota yet; I don't like the idea of blinding other drivers.

I'd be careful of using those 100 watt bulbs, not just for the electrical system but they have also been known to melt plastic headlamp assemblies.
Others warned against this when I had my Nissan Frontier.

loose lumens or

true HID bulbs start
at about 4200K and
go up to 10000K
getting bluer or

Ya i had silverstar bulbs for headlights 9007 an 880 for the driving/fog the headlight bulbs havnt had a problem with but the really didnt make much of a difference that oem justa lil whiter. the 880 for the foglamps they suck the pass. side was expired in less than a month an the other lasted about 4 months ... needless to say they dont seem to be anything to brag about. And as for blinding other drivers an the reason you got flashed is because they are appently not aimed properly - even the best of HID headlamps will not blind others aslong as u have them properly aimed... that is the only reason u got flashed they are ment to illuminate the road not the sky or other drivers eyes/inside of there vehicles. just adjust them down an center a little - you should aim them on a wall on a flat surface with the low beams on... they should both be centered..not aimed up or left or right beside the size of the vehicle you dont need them to be high up on low beam - when u turn your high beams on that is what they do spread out an illuminate more of the area.
Here is a page to help you out....

says about blinding other drivers

Ya I agree
I had silverstars my car had the fogs burn out quicker than yours matt - both went in about 3 months. There is $40 well spent huh? what a waste.
then the one headlamp burnt out in about 6 months.
My Opinion is silverstars f*ckin blow! taping a mini mag with a kyrp.bulb on my hood would of done better. they are wastes of money an like the other guy(Well) said poorly engineered - if they were not poorly engineered then people wouldnt have stupid problems like this with them.!
they dont do hardly anything except make the beam whitish like matt said. I had better luck with the gas APC bulbs.

I tried some of the midnightmoose aftermarket 100w bulbs and was not impressed at all. They're better than stock, but just barely, and I mean juuust barely. I ended up getting some small Hella FF50 driving lights, I think (maybe FF-75s...the rounder ones). They cost about $80, but they're so bright I can't even tell if my brights are on or not. They're wired to come on with brights, and the light they throw is amazing for such a small package. I mounted them in the "mouth" of the plastic valence, and they're not obtrusive at all.

Best $80 I've spent on the truck.
