Message: I just installed my Cobra CB and a 9ft whip on my truck. The antenna is mounted in the rear driverside corner of the bed and i used a 20 cable that already had connecters on it.
my problem is that i dont seem to be getting good reception at all. i can hear people talking, but it is not clear...i am planning on getting it tuned, but should the reception be as bad as it is right now?
also I called a stereo shop and they wanted $70 to tune it..this seems a little high...what do you guys think?
thanks for the help

Message: THRASH1,
A reputable CB shop should only charge you about $20.00 to adjust your SWR(tune your antenna) or for about the same price you can get a meter and patch cable from Radio Shack and do it yourself(ain't difficult).
10-4?

Message: There is a formula to use that determines the exact length of cable to use for your antenna. You plug in the frequency that you use most into the formula and the result is the optimum length. Do a search on the internet for SWR tuning or COAX+SWR and so on until you find it. For instance, channel 19 (28.185 MHz) came up with an ideal coax length of 11'4" if I remember correct. You should also get an Ohmmeter and check that you do not currently have the antenna grounded out which could create the problems you are having right now.

Message: The coax length isn't critical with a factory made CB coax. Anything between 17-20 ft is okay. The length is concerned with the "velocity factor" of the coax, and only becomes a concern with longer runs of coax.
A 9 ft whip has a natural resonance in the CB range and shouldn't require much tuning. SWR is a logarithmic equation, and really only changes transmitting capability slightly. Reception should be clear even with messed up SWR.
An SWR of 2:1 only reduces x-mit power to 90%, an SWR of 3:1 puts you down to 75% power out - not a big deal.
You refer to reception being unclear, which could be the coax connectors may be loose, or not soldered from the factory very well. It could be a bad CB itself. Any good CB shop can 'peak' your CB,and test the entire setup for about $20-30.

Message: Where can I buy a 9ft whip. I have been looking everywhere for one. And what would be a good price with or without the cable.
Thanks
