Message: Hi All.
I have a 97 Dakota w/ a 5.2 litre. I bought it in 99 w/ about 80,000 miles on it. I had the trans fluid and filter changed. The guy at the shop said there were some metal shavings on the bottom of the pan, but it ran fine.
About 6 months ago at 100,000 miles the trans started to slip. It is intermittent, but usually it sticks in 2nd gear until I let off the gas and let the rpm's come down. Then it will either go into 3rd or rev up more then go into 3rd.
The seals are leaking and I added fluid (type 3 chrysler) today which improved the performance. Now all I have to do is let off the gas a little for the 2 to 3 shift. It's not slipping.
I've been told by some that changing the fluid and filter would only make things worse, (cottman transmissions) but feel it could only help. They said everything externally checked out fine except for the leaking seals. I know this is not an uncommon problem. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. So do I try changing the fluid and filter or let them tear into it? Dollarwise it seems ridiculous not to go the cheaper route first. Am I wrong?
Sincerely,
Rick
