Subject: Help! Heater core $$?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

My brother thinks that I've got a bad heater core in my 1998 Dodge Dakota. They windows haven't been poorly defrosting for the last couple of weeks and this weekend it started to smell like antifreeze in the cab.

My question is how much should this cost me????? My local dealership has tried to screw me over in the service department before and I'ld like to walk in armed with info.

TIA

Mine went out on me last summer. My mechanic charged me $400 for the job. To me it was worth it, there was no way I was going to try and yank my whole dash out. I have a '99 r/t, hope that gives you some sort of idea. good luck

Just a thought but you may want to look at a few things first. The first step is to look for a wet pass. side floor board. Second would be leaky hoses and or thermostat housing. Third you may want to try switching your upper and lower heater core hoses, run the engine to warm up, shut off swap back, and recheck. This step alone will rid your heater core of a possible vapor lock. If you are sure it is a heater core, the internet is a beustiful thing when it comes to shopping.
