Todd,
I'm planning to carry a motorcycle in the bed of the pickup. Will be loading it with a motorcycle ramp and was wondering if the tailgate would bear the weight. Bike is approx. 650 lbs. Once the bike is loaded, there will be no wieght on the tailgate. Thanks for your quick reply.

Roy, oh OK.,

The tailgate will never have the entire weight of the bike on it at any one time anyway.

Load and go, unless theres some damage you haven't mentioned, no problem. I carried my GS1100, not quite as heavy, but you shouldn't have a problem.

200 lbs. It is marked on my tailgate or in the owner's manual on my 2001 Quad.

I weigh 225 and sit on it all the time and "it hasn't let me down", yet!

I think th e cables that support it are the issue.

Engineers generally allow for at least 150% overdesign, so I'd think 300lbs would still be safe unless you're doing some wild 4-wheeling with the bike in the back.

I know from experience that the cables are not the weak link as far as putting too much weight on A tailgate.
Being that I crushed my tailgate when I tried loading A big steel box in the bed of my 95 DAK with A fork lift. after the middle section of the tailgate contacted the trailer ball on the bumper the cables never broke, streched or showed any damage what so ever.

I loaded a 700-800 lb kiosk/freezer unit into the back of my truck and it was resting on my tailgate for a bit before we pushed it on....no problems!! (I do have a small dent in it now though). So it'll have no problem with you loading a bike.

You could just take the tailgate off and lay the ramp directly on the bed.

I have had more then 400 lbs of people on my gate repeatedly!!! I have also loaded garden tractors and such in it with out a ramp so you should be fine. If worried just take the gate off but I really think you should be ok!
