Subject: Transmission HELP! IP: Logged
Message: Well, I now have a Dak that won't go into any gear. I have a 2000 Dakota 4x4 4.7L automatic. I was leaving work and the transmission just gave out. I did however manage to make it out of the parking lot.
History of resent events:
Last night I did two dounts.(In the snow) Would have done more but the wife was in the truck and we had just finished dinner.
Went to work this morning in 4wd nothing seemed wrong.
Went to leave work today. Put it in reverse. No problem. Put it in to drive. Truck paused for about two seconds then went okay.
Started to leave the parking lot in 2wd and the tires started to spin and let off the gas.
Hit the straight road and started moving fine. And then nowhere. Coasted to a stop and put it in park then drive then reverse ... Nothing
I did change the filter about 3,000 miles ago. Fluid level checked okay. One week later okay. FYI – I used Amsoil – not that is the cause.
Checked level today. Very high, cold trans and it was about half an inch above hot marks.
When I try to get it in gear I don’t hear anything coming from the transmission.
Any help would but great.
Thanks,
Duane
If I pulled the negative battery cable would that help. Maybe the computer got screwed up? I only have 34,000 miles on this truck!

Message: when you put you truck into gear, do you hear the sloenoid pack make its clicking noise, or nothing at all? any codes, check engine light? run your diagnostics thru your instrument cluster and see if anything shows up.

Since the truck is at work and I am hear at home I cannot check the codes. But I will do that first thing in the mourning.
When I checked the fluid level I was in park. So the reading may not be correct.

Message: Man i hate to tell you this. I have a 1990 that did the very same thing just a week ago. Had the hesitation, then the tranny went into gear. About a block later, the thing came outa gear, so it felt, and didnt run at all. The engine reved like normal, but the tranny didnt engage at all. It is being worked on right now. Totally rebuilt tranny $2K!!!
No joke man, I hope your warrenty is still good.
Good Luck.

Message: Sounds like a loss of pressure, and/or sprag failure. The list of causes for this kind of problem is lengthy. Where are you located? May be able to get you a contact......

Message: I'm no expert but it sounds like you may have lost the pump. A good way to check would be to start it, put it in nutrual and crack the line to the transmission cooler. If it isn't under alot of pressure there is a good chance your pump sheared.
Good luck.

Message: I got my truck back today!
Since I was only 36 days out a warrenty they "goodwilled" my truck. Great!! Cost me nothing to have it fixed.
What was wrong with it you maybe wondering. I needed a new transmission! "Internal failure" What ever.
I only have one question. Would they have had to change the oil for some reason? Like maybe they had to take off the oil pan to remove the transmission. Just a guess.
Thanks
