Subject: 2003 Dakota brake Noise IP: Logged
Message: Went down to local 5* looking to buy a quad Dakota 4WD V8. All the ones I tested drove very nice and had good power except there was one problem. Everyone (4 of them), when put into reverse and backed up slowly there was this moan (from the front or rear, can't tell) from the brakes that was awful. Lightly touch the brakes and it stopped. SOunded almost like when you creep at a light going down on a hill. I thought at first it was rust on the rotors because they were sitting around but even after a 15 mile test drive (stop & go and highway) they all still did it. The sales people were stumped until a Dodge Factory Rep came out and said... trait of the vehicle because of the new designed brakes they are using for 03. I aksed does it go away after a couple hundred of miles or so and he said, maybe, maybe not but since it is normal there is no problem and nothing to worry about..
I would like to know a couple of things.
1. Any 03 owners experience this problem?
2. If so, did the dealer fix it or tell you to live with it?
3. If this is normal, how can Dodge allow this and think their reputation will not be pissed on.

Message: i have 03 qc and it does the same thing.(3100miles)
also somethig groans and creaks(seems to be in rear of truck, but hear up front sometimes) when i take a corner over a bump or sometimes hit a bump when it is cold out, really cold, like 20 and under, doesnt do it when its warmer.
i can live with it,if it gets worse or starts happening when its warmer ill bring it to dealer.
you might be more concerned with ball joints that dont last and undersized brakes that fail early.
there are good fixes for these things found on this site and speedtweaks. if you know they are going to happen it wont be as stressful and you will know what to do.
nothings perfect and i would still recommend truck, grateful i didnt buy an 00,01,or 02.some pcm issues have been cleared up, among other things i hope.
btw, my oil press.gauge will build press normaly when i start truck but stay right in the middle and stay there? doesnt change with rpms or anything. anybody else experiance or have any thoughts on this?
thanks, buy the truck sitedrifter and bookmark this site and you will be ok.

Message: Sitedrifter:
My '03 CC has the same problem, the moan comes from the right rear. I noticed when I hit the brakes hard a couple of times, it will diminish but comes back later when the brakes haven't been used (I assume they have cooled down). I first thought it might be the LSD clutches, but it only does it in reverse & when the brakes are lightly applied. Perhaps that's why they tell you in the owners manual to hit the brakes hard a few times to seat the pads in, who knows?
The moan isn't as loud or as persistent as it was when I got the truck 3 weeks ago, however, when I take it in for it's first oil change, I'm going to have the service boys check it out.
I'll let you know what I find out,
Greg

Message: I'm pretty sure its the torque converter. the fuel
pump is also pretty loud, but thats more of a
constant buzz (if you know what I mean)
nothing to worry about, BUY THE TRUCK !!!!
dakota brakes suck. no question about it, the
rotors are weak (too weak for a 4000lb truck) I
dont know how well the new 4 wheel disc
setup is working, but the original rotors on my
dak needed turning at 15,000 miles. I'm at
26,000 now and they definately need
replacing.

Message: No Problems here, I have a new 03 Dakota R/T with about 2000 miles and its been perfect so far. The brakes stop on a dime and I have'nt heard any noises.
I think you guys should get your brakes checked by the dealer and continue complaining until they get your brakes fixed. If the dealer can't find anything after three attempts, then all you need to say is lemon law and watch them change their tune. Best of luck

Message: This is definitely an issue with the new designed brakes of 2003. Supposedly these brakes are on the Rams also and I wonder if they do it too.
I would love to buy a Dak but not with that noise whether it is normal or not. Chrysler is stupid for allowing QC to let this through.
All the trucks (3 of them) were built prior to 12/31/03 so I wonder if later ones coming to my dealer will be better
I will wait until the spring and check again

Message: I have an 2003 QC 5-speed and the rear brakes would make that moan when I let it roll backwards. I took it to the dealer and drove around the lot with the mechanic, but of course it wouldn't do it. This was when the truck was about two weeks old, it hasn't done it since.
I have heard other people complain of the same thing.

Message: Definitely reassuring to hear that a lot of other people have this problem. My '03 Quad Cab Dakota has made this noise since the first time I backed it out when I picked it up from the dealer. It now has 1400 miles on it, and the noise is still goin strong. I guess we should all just keep complaining and having the dealer document it, kind of like the oil sludge problem. Hopefully in a year or two they'll finally fix it!

Message: Bought an '03 Dakota QC, 4x4, 4.7, SLT ... in Mar '03 - SAME SOUND when I test drove at the lot - but they swore they fixed it (adjusted the emergency brake) - so I bought it. Got it home and the sound reappeared. I then took it back - they replaced the brakes ... no change. The Service Dep't said they even called Chrysler "HQ" who said they had no idea about the "problem." They then told me to drive it for 1,000 miles and come back. I laughed and stormed into the GMs office. He gave me a new truck (SLT Plus!). After all that ... I backed it into my drive way and ... "Boooooop" ... the same sound. The dealership had no idea it was a "standard" sound. Anyway - I LOVE my new truck and can live with the sound now that I know it's nothin'!!!

Message: I had it too. I took it back to the dealership the
day after I bought it to ask about it. I was able
to replicate the sound with the salesman in
the truck so they agreed to take a look at it
while they were buffing out a weird patch in the
clearcoat... The verdict? just drive it. They said
they had other people complain about it too,
and that it would go away when the brakes
wore a bit. In my case it went away (so far,
knock on wood) after some
mash-the-brake-pedal type stops.
Regarding the fuel pump, yargh. The one in
my wife's 3.7l Jeep Liberty drives me NUTS
when it's cold out. I've had it replaced under
warranty twice... It's just too dang loud. I hope
they fixed it on the Dakota!

Message: I got my 2003 QC 4X4 two weeks ago and had the moan as soon as I backed up slowly at home. The dealer said it was "normal" (they checked it while they were checking out why my left front speaker didn't work - new speaker ordered). I was about to complain, but it seems to have gone away. I did some fast reversing, and followed a break-in procedure I found on-line in this excellent write-up:
http://www.stoptech.com/whitepapers/warped_rotors_myth.htm
Now my question:
While I was looking under the truck, I noticed that a few of the iron parts were completely coated with rust. The rear stabilizer, the front hub knuckles (is that what they're called?), etc. Not that it will rust through, it just didn't look like any other vehicle I'd had, or any of the other Dakotas at the dealer. Like they skipped a coating step or something. Is this normal?

Message: I have a 02 built in April of 02. My brakes had a multitude of problems! The replaced the Rotors, pads, and everything in the rear! They had the factory Zone rep out and they changed to what they said was the new type used in the 2003. I had noise as many have said. They changed the back drums, brake cyclenders, shoes, back to what they were and I have had no problems in 5,000 miles. I noe have 35,000 miles on my Quad Cab 4x4 4.7. I spent $121.00 on turning the rotors and drums at 17,000 miles, which Dodge refunded me because they saw I had been through the mill. But take heart my brother in law has a 99 Ford 150 which has MAJOR engine, brake, and tranny problems! I am glad i have a Dodge.

Message: I have the same problem 6,000 miles. Dealer said it had something to do with some valve and that it was normal because of some hydraulic pressure? Anyhow, I have no other performance issues, and it only happens when I back out first thing in the morning. I haven't had it long enough to know if this problem will persist when it warms up, which should be any day now... gotta love the desert and our 115+ heat!

Its fine now, just towed my boat 10 miles for the first time, did great. Boat is 3500#s with no trailer brakes, truck didnt mind at all. I am very happy I have the bigger four wheel disk set up.
