Subject: anyone w/ mopar perf. catalog? IP: Logged
Message: I really need to know what mopar gets for a new A 500 tranny? The AAmco place wants to rebuild mine for $2000.! I was wondering if I could get a new one for that or maybe just alittle more.
OR
Is a rebuilt tranny as good as a new tranny?
Thanks.
Joe E.
ps, I have a 1990 Dakota 2wd V6. Auto w OD. 112K miles. (all on a lift with a tranny in 20 pieces now)

Message: Just give a call to a nearby dodge dealership. I had a mopar perf. book a couple of years ago and I dont believe in had ordinary replacement parts, only upgrades.

Message: The my MP catalog lists the A500 for $1,357.81 and the A518 for $1,533.75. I have seen new hi-po units for around 2grand. The old man I got my truck from had the trans rebuilt for $1,800. I would have never paid that for the stock poor shifting trans. If anything I would have got a competion 727 3spd and saved the $1,000.

Message: I can get you a A500 trans rebuilt with warranty, $825 + shipping + your old core + $10 finders fee :)
Ok, I'll wave the fee -- It'll be a straight replacement, stock no frills transmission.
Same place I got my big block 727 tranny from.
www.phoenixhardparts.com I have personally been to their location in Phoenix-- They do have over 1600+ transmissions!! Full tranny dynos there too.

Message: Ill have to look into that. Thanks.
About how much would it be to have a tranny installed? If I ordered one from another state, shipped it in to a shop. Then paid them to install. Thanks.

Whats better/stronger.. A rebuilt tranny or a brand new MP tranny?

Message: As to what is better, it all depends. A rebuild could be done with OEM parts(stock parts) then I'd say a new replacement is better if the price is within $250. On the other hand the rebuild could be done with aftermarket replacement up-grade parts(clutches)or closer tolerances that can last longer and handle more power. One good thing about a rebuild is that you could probably have a shift kit installed for a little extra charge. The problem with mine was that they didn't check/replace the Vehicle Speed Sensor which was giving me problems last year(less than a year after the rebuild!) I would definitely get a new performance TQ converter while replacing the trans.
Good luck

Message: Thanks for the reply. The manager said there were no aftermarket upgrades he could get for my tranny? What gives? If I got a stronger Torque converter, what kind should I look for? Are their any other parts that I could look for to increase the strength of my tranny that are better than stock OEM? Thanks.

Message: Here are a couple sites that tell what they use to strengthen up thier transmissions. Some of the sites only talk about the A518 (since that's what I have) but some of the parts and the ideas are the same.
http://transmissioncenter.net/dodge.htm
http://www.hughesperformance.com/street.html (TQ converters also)
http://www.powerdemon.com/Dodge_Truck.html (TQ converters also)

Just TQ converters-

http://www.converter.com/viper.htm
http://www.tpiperformance.com/a5a5a6locupp.html
The mopar TQ converter can be bought from any mopar speed shop site like (www.krcperformance.com)-probably the most popular aftermarket street converter
The main improvements are (shift kits), kevlar or high friction clutches , Kolene heat treated steels, Kevlar band, High flow filter/pump additions for durability- (trans coolers), deeper pans.
I hope this gives you an idea of whats out there and what to look for:)

Message: Wow, thanks for the many links. Ill take my time and go throught them thoroughly.
So far I have the tranny shop totally rebuilding the A500. With the TransGo Performance Shift kit, and a Hayden Tranny cooler. Hopefully between these systems, it will hold up for a long time to come. I probably will not be swapping the 318 for a while now, seeing this is taking the $2K I was to put into the engine. But someday.
Since I run larger 31 in tires on my 2wd, tranny jumping is bad on long trips. Would a lower gear ratio help. I though I cant go as fast but it will help with the engine and tranny not runnen so hard most of the time. Well, thanks for the help.
