Subject: Engine Stall in 4x4 mode...
IP: Logged

Message:
I've noticed that my Dak has a tendency to stall at low speeds whenever I turn my wheels (as in... pulling in and out of my driveway.)

It sounds like something is rubbing underneath, however I mentioned it to the dealer and they said something to the effect that it is the front axle locking mechanism that reduces your turning radius... (but I don't know if he is blowin' me a bunch of bull...)

Is this "normal" for a 4x4... or something that I should be worried about. Have any of you experienced this?

Yes, I to have experienced the same thing you are describing. I have a 97 4x4 club cab 5.2 5spd. I also had an 82 Jeep CJ-7 that did the exact same thing. I think the steering radius is reduced and wheel you turn it to the area of wheel lock, the power steering pump increases drag load and stalls the engine out. I try to avoid going to wheel lock and keep my foot in the gas. Annoying but livable.

Shouldn't make sharp turns in 4x4 at all (if you're on dry pavement or some other surface with good traction.) Your front and rear wheels will try to turn at different speeds because of the different paths they're taking. Being that your front and rear axle get locked together in 4WD, the driveline will tend to "bind up." I'm guessing that if your not moving fast, your engine will stall out because of the amount of force it takes to "unbind" the drive line (and cause wheel-hop)would be too much. But yea, something like that would be normal I guess if you're trying to make a sharp turn, at low speed, on dry pavement, in 4WD.

Honestly, this makes it a pain in the arse when I am in 4x4 mode and I'm trying to park in a parking space... like at the mall or something.

I turn the wheel and the truck virtually cuts off on me...

Geez... You'd think there was a "better way"... how do "all time 4x4s" do it?

You should definately take it out of 4x4 to park if its not necesarry. Part-time 4x4 isn't meant to be used in that kinda situation (unless there is no traction, i.e. snow or mud.) A Full-Time 4x4 or "All Wheel Drive" has what you'd call an inter-axle differential. It works like the diff between your wheels on the axle in that it will alow the front and rear axle to turn at separate speeds (as is the case when going thru a turn) and not bind up. Full-time 4x4 or All-Wheel Drive are designed to be able to handle situations like that normally. Part-time 4x4 is ONLY meant to be used when extra traction may be needed like when your off road, or its snowy, or raining like hell with lots of water on the road. You should never [have to] drive in 4WD under regular circumstances. Driving in 4WD regularyly on normal roads will wear your tires down much quicker, put unnecessary strain on the front driveline and possibly break it, and you'll be visiting the gas pump more often.

Now I don't have much experience with an automatic, but I would guess that if you did need to turn sharp in 4x4 on a regular road, maybe put it into low gear. That should lower the chances it will stall. Now I'm curious about my theory. lol Anyone else think this would help???

Thank you for that input mpil1...

I was really beginning to worry that something was wrong with my truck.

BTW... our Daks can do Part time or Full Time 4x4, so what would be the case for anyone here to leave it in Full Time 4x4 (since that is an option...)?

the part time trucks have three settings:
1.) 2WD, 2.) 4HI, and 3.) 4LO

I think the full time or all wheel drive trucks have
1.) AWD (all wheel), 2.) 4HI, and 3.) 4LO

If you have the AWD transfer case (NV244 I think??) then leave it in AWD normally. 4HI and 4LO will act the same as they do on a part-time truck. I think thats answers your question, doesn't it????
