Subject: 2001 DAk QC 4.7 And Flowmaster Muffler Choices?
IP: Logged

I want just a muffler, will do a custom 2 1/4 inch dual exit to the rear (hell of a lot of bending in
order to keep the spare tire and also do a clean driver side exit) with 3 inch chrome tips(mainly for show)...to be installed around 500 miles or so (anyone install a custom cat-back dual setup earlier?)

Narrowed down my muffler choices to:

Delta Flow 50 Series (appears there is no 2 1/4 outlets, will have the pipes 'stretched', part
#9425502 ($89 at Summit)

SUV 50 Series Performance, has 2 1/2 inch inlet, dual 2 1/4 outlets, part #525552 ($92 at
truckperformance.com)

I want a nice rumble at idle, the muffler to talk when accelerating and to be quiet in the cab at
highway speeds...I'm told the SUV series isn't that much louder in the cab (if at all) -vs- the
delta flow but gives a bit more gains...does this sound right?

BTW, my muffler shop does great work but wants to order the muffler, what is a acceptable
mark up for him on the muffler?

My DAK QC has 55 miles on it, if she only knew what she's in for!

Two questions. First why spend extra money on an exhaust system if the factory one is still in good shape? You are already paying for the factory exhaust. I would like to know why you would want to kill all of your low end torgue? You would be better off from a logistical, design, cost and performance standpoint with a single 3" pipe then two 2 1/4" pipes. If you do not modify the rest of your engine form the intake side all the way through the exh system you will see very little gain if any in performance at any RPM. You might try polishing the tail pipe with rough and a felt bob. Generaly if you do not excede 6000 RPM and do not run NOS or forced induction dual exh. and x-over pipes do little for you.

MACE, I am just running the Flowmaster mufflet, (40 series 2 Chamber) and the sound is great although the 50 series is more what you are looking for.

Best power gains though are had with the single exit. I retained my stock exit location and had a 3" chrome tip welded on so it looks good.

hey mace go for it do the duals the 40 series rocks and sounds awsome i have it on mine i would suggest a 3in inlet and 2 1/2 outlet as for later mods it would be good and you dont lose bottem end tourqe you gain more as the butt dyno said later

Sandman:

Though the stock exhaust system is brand new and functional, we all know it can be done better.

I'm going for both form (love the looks of rear dual exhausts with big chrome tips) and function (get more HP/TQ).

With dual 2 1/4 inch pipes I'm sure I won't lose low-end torque -vs- the stock exhaust, but someone please correct me if I'm wrong (flomaster and my muffler guy say I will see a increase)

I was a diehard Gibson Single Side 3in cat-back system fan till I started seeing pictures and hearing sound bites of DAK QC owners with dual rear exhausts...I'd give up a little power for the looks and sound!

BTW, intake modes, thermostat, and PCM upgrades are also planned...I'm gonna be gentle and let the 4.7 break in before any mods start...also allows me the chance to find any problems while still stock.

Thanks

A 5-20hp increase will not translate into anything that you can feel or realy measure in terms of performance. You realy have to increase hp and torque in large increments to see a significant difference in performance. You realy have to add about 50-100 hp and 65-125 lbft of torque to realy notice a slight difference in performance. You might try putting your truck on a diet. Ever 7 lbs of weight your truck loses = the performance gain of 1 hp. If you were to gain 100-150 hp then you would experince a large increase in performance. I can appreciate that you might like the cool sound and looks but you are not going to gain a significant amount of hp with simple bolt on type upgrades. You can eat up alot of money on aftermarket parts that do little to improve performance. If you are going to free up the intake and exhaust then you should consider forced induction or No2. The only way to make significantly more power is to squeze more air and fuel into those cylinder at a higher pressure either staticaly or dynamicly.

No offense Sandman, but did you used to work on imports? Bolt ons make no power? Whats next? "Don't bother with that supercharger, it's just a waste of gas." If he wants duals, encourage him...Duals sound nice (which is what he wants) and add mid-high range power ( I don't know very many people who cruise around with the engine just above idle). Granted, a 3 inch single exhaust would add MORE power, but he wants the Look to go with the sound and power. For the record, ask Bernd about bolt ons. A 15 second v6 is impressive in any book.

I'm gonna "second" that....

It seems that if bolt-ons (cat-back, intake, 69mm TB, etc.) didn't acheive favorable results, the demand for them would NOT by skyrocketing , like it presently is.

C'mon... look at how many people are waiting feverishly for the soon-to-be-released K&N Gen II for the 4.7L. I kinda doubt that ALL of them are first-time performance enthusiasts.

Besides, we're not talking just drag-strip racing here... most of us crave some smiley-face acceleration from our daily drivers.

Go for the duals... if you feel that you've lost too much bottom-end, open up the wallet and let some more mixture into the other end (TB and intake).
