Has anyone out there towed with a dakota rt. I was missled on the tow capacity when I bought my 2002 cc dakota rt. I need to be able to tow my 68 Barracuda drag car with this truck. After going to the racetrack this past weekend and seeing a Ford lightning towing a 70 chevelle I am more determined to tow.

The R/T can tow, but with its lowered suspension geometry it can only tow 2000lbs off of the factory bumper location, and you have to be very careful with the tongue weight and alignment. From what I have read if you have a proper Class III/IV/V hitch installed to the frame of the R/T your towing weight will be restored to the 6000+ lb limit that the 5.9L V8/46RE drivetrain will allow.
There was a big lawsuit between 1998-1999 Dakota R/T owners and Dodge because of this issue. At the time they advertised 6000+ lbs of towing capacity but it was really only 2000. 98-99 owners got the opportunity to either trade in their trucks as-is for a 2000 R/T, or get a free extended warranty. The 2000-2003 R/T has always been advertised in all printed material as having a 2000lb towing capacity - if a salesman told you otherwise they were wrong.

As Steve said, you can tow up t 6K with your truck, but will need a classIV or better hitchk, and aither some helper prings, or airbags to keep the frame off the bumpstops in the rear. The lowered suspension from the factory decreases the clearance for the suspension.

Make sure you change your rearend gear lube to 75w-140 and add conditioner cost less than 20 bucks ca but you wont void your warranty
