Subject: question IP: Logged
Message: Hello, I have a 2001 QC with about 500 miles on it, and in the last week I have noticed twice upon starup that when I step on the gas, the engine gets very loud. I dont really know how to describe the sound, except almost like a really loud fan, and the engine seems to lack power for all this noise, I mean it moves, but it's sluggish and not responsive. By the time I get the end of my street, the noise is gone and everything is fine. This only happens the first time I start it up in a day, usually when its kinda cold out? Any ideas of what could be wrong?

Message: Perfectly normal. I forget exactly why this happens. I'll check my service manual to see if I can find out exactly what the deal is, but I do know that it is normal. Mine does the same thing.

Message: I don't know what it is, mine does it, as well as the 88 F-250 I traded in for it. Wife's POS kia does it too. I've seen many many vehicles do this. Its designed to, although I don't know why.

Message: It's your fan clutch, and it's normal, and it's extremely aggravating.
There was a TSB out there to replace the fan clutch, but I don't know the number, sorry.
It's working properly, it's just an aggravation.

Message: I was doing a test drive of a quad cab and the sales guy said it was normal. Its just a way to get the motor up to heat faster.

Message: I test drova a Durango before settling on a
Dakota. During the test, the engine started the
"roaring noise". The dealer said it was normal and
attributed it to Mercedes engineers who designed
the 4.7. He said it would only do it at cold
engine temp.
My new Dakota just started doing it but does it
when hot too, no rhyme or reason to the timing of
this. I had been driving for hours in the
mountains, pulled over for a few minutes with
engine running, then resumed driving when it
started. Not thrilled about it as there are many
times while driving that this power killer will
prove very i
