Subject: ABS & Break Light Problem
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello,

Anyone ever have a problem with their ABS & Break light coming on at the same time. It just happened recently all by it's lonesome and I had no work done on the truck for like 5 months at least.

The light does not come on right away when I start the truck. The lights only comes on after I hit about 40 mph and then it stays on until I shut the truck off. I can drive 35 all day and the lights never come on. So I'm thinking it may be the speed sensor or something???

Any ideas? I hate to pay Dodge an arm and leg to fine out it was something that could be fixed for like $20 or $30 bucks.

Do you have front anti-lock as well? On the front there is not alot of clearance between the steering knuckle and the brake rotor and the sensor wire can be easily damaged if it slips out of it's harness. If it is damaged they're easy to fix. Mine was cut and I soldered it. No probs since. Also, the sensor itself is coated with a conductive grease. Unscrew them and see if they are dry before you just replace them.

don't know if this is it, but I had the same problem on my 93. It was a fuse. Sounds like its probably something else for yours but couldn't hurt to check.

my 93 with rear abs, did that because of a fuse also. Make sure your brake lights are coming on! Mine were out because of the fuse and I was almost ass ended because of it!

I'll start by purchasing the rear sensor. Thanks for everyones help. I do not believe it's a fuse because my all my tail lights work... etc. My speedometer works fine so I gues I'll start with a sensor.

thanks all.

Timberwolf--Could the problem you described (steering knuckle too close to the rotor) cause the lights to come on only when I turn the wheel hard in one direction or the other, like when I am making a u-turn or turning into a tight parking space? I have a 99 5.2L 4X4 with 4 wheel ABS and the ABS and Brake lights come on only when I turn the wheel hard, then turn off after I am going straight again. Any ideas?

Ok..can someone take a picture of the rear sensor thats near or above the rear differential because I cannot find it and post it or email it to me. I got the sensor it was only $32 buck and Dodge wants like $144 to intall it. So I'm definitly not going that route.

Well, anyone can give me a better description of where it's located I'd appreciate it.

thanks, Bill

Alright,

I replaced the sensor and the ABS & Brake light is still came on once I got around 40mph. Do I need to reset the computer or something? How do I do that if so or anyone else have an idea?

Well,

I replaced the sensor this morning and the ABS & Brake still came on after hitting about 40mph. Anyone else with ideas on this problem. Do I need to reset the computer now that I changed that speed sensor?

If i remember correctly there is 2 speed sensors. One is on the differencial and the other on your tranny. I believe the one on your defferential detects speeds from 0-40 and the other from 40 up. Id go ahead and reset the computer, but probably wont help. ABS is a soft code it automatically will go out by itself or after a number of starts.

Warden-Yes it could very well be that. The sensor is connected via a 2 conductor wire. It could be breaking the connection when you turn. The good news it that if it is cut, it can be soldered and still work. All you have to do to check it is take the rotor off.

Well, I reset the computer by doing that disconnect of the negative battery and pushing the key forward for at least 20 seconds and the ABS & Brake light still came on around 40mph. Guess I"m off to the dealer. I'm not messing around with any tranny sensors. I'll let you all know what the dealer says tomorrow. Maybe they have to reset the codes after a rear differential speed sensor is replaced (which I did) Regardless I'll let you all know.

Well, I took my truck to the dealership and they found the problem. My problem was my brake light and ABS light would come on between 40 - 50 miles per hour and would stay on until I turned the truck off.

It is a brake light sensor that is bad. Basically, the truck thought that my foot was costantly on the brake. This requires replacing the sensor and the dealer resetting the computer to get rid of the code.

There was also code from the transmission for my tires. I had the 31 inch tires stock and I put 32x11.5x15 tires on. So they cleared that code and re-adjusted the transmission to match my tires.

Not bad for $140.00 and I pick her up in a few hours.
