Message: I have a 1989 Dakota Sport 4x4 and it has started to really idle bad. When you are just sitting at a light or anywhere for that matter. Any suggestions? It really doesnt sound very good but still seems to run fine while I'm driving it.

Message: Well, it could be a million things. I would start easy. check all vacum hoses and connections that you can get to. Make sure the throttle body is clean also. Does it hesitate during acceleration from a stop? Just try those things and let us know what you find, if anything.

Message: I'm not a great expert on Magnum engines but have you tuned her? Cap, rotor, plugs, air filter, gas filter, wires, timing?? Try getting her back to spec and then check the sensors. I had a 87 Daytona and from what I could remember if you had the check engine light come on you can access the recordings. Try turning the ignition key to on (not starting) three times and leave on the third (not started) and your check engine light will blink a code. If you have a shop manual, you can identify a bad sensor or sensor circuit. Another problem might be a timing chain slip. (won't think so) I had a problem with a module in the distributor but that affect starting as well. Good Luck

Click on the part where it says: "Pre-1997 Dakota Fault Codes". There you can use the CHECK ENGINE light to do a self-diagnostic check on your engine. Sounds to me like its an idle-speed sensor. Definitely a sensor, and checking the fault codes will reveal which area of the engine needs attention!

(I perform a diagnistic about once every other month to make sure everything is in check) Takes about 5 minutes.

Message: Have you checked for foul spark plugs? When is the last time you installed new ones? Also, you may just be misfiring, rather than "idling bad". A simple tune-up using a strobe light thing to check the timing of your engine will be a good place to work on...
I'm still convinced its a sensor however....Are you sure you did the fault codes right??? If it did not reveal anything with sensors, then consider new spark plugs, adjust your timing, inspect the spark plug wires. I use an aftermarket ignition system and my 1989 Dakota Sport screams! No misfires. No fouled plugs. Nothing.

Message: Check the fuel pressure. My 88 was running at 6 psi when it should have had 14 psi and it barely ran and started, but it did. The problem was magnified at idle. Could be the fuel pump. Could be the MAP sensor (on the firewall) Could be the plastic plate in the distributor is broken.
