Message: First you need to educate yourself.
Is it legal to have one in a vehicle in your state?
Does your local police force use a trunked or digital system? If so you'll need a scanner capable of picking up those types of transmissions.
It might be best to do some reading first. It'll answer most of your questions.

Message: I use a scanner in my Dakota and they are illegal where I live (Michigan). If it saves you just one speeding ticket, it is worth the money.

Message: The legality of police scanners is somewhat abritrary. I'm a licenced ham radio operator. My Dak sports an IC-706MKIIG HF/VHF/UHF transceiver. It works great as a scanner too. State laws don't override my FCC license to have/use my mobile radio... even though it receives police freq's.
The solution to being legal with your scanner is to become a tech class ham. If interested, visit the arrl page at www.arrl.org
Of course if your intent is to use the police scanner during the commission of a crime the fact that you're a ham won't help. You'll lose your FCC license and still be subjected to the penalties that come with using the radio to further your crime.

Message: I really don't care if it's legal or not. I plan on getting a police jammer for my traffic tickets, but a scanner would be good for holding field parties, let's you know when they are coming after you. Like last night. 2 people went to jail, k-9 unit was out, and shot-guns were drawn, and I got away:) Was a blast! We Texans know how to party.

Message: Well, first make sure you're well aware of what you can be charged with if you're caught with the scanner.
What the heck is a "police jammer"? Never heard of such a thing. Don't waste your money on those gadgets which claim to "absorb" radar or laser. They really don't work. A good radar detector and common sense are invaluable... and legal (except in a lot of Canada, Washington DC and Virginia)

Message: I have an Icom R-10 (hand-held size) scanner mounted in my arm-rest compartment. The antenna is a discretely mounted through-the-glass capacitively coupled antenna on my extended cab side window between the plastic "louvers" of the custom cab-window cover. The cable is run "hidden" all the way into the scanner, and power is gotten from a regulator box I built, which sits in my bench-seat compartment in the cab. The regulator box *also* supplies the external speakers which the scanner uses to project *good* strong audio. The speakers are just external/amplified "computer" speakers that are mounted on both sides of the rear bench seat in the cup-holder area very discrete and low-key.
What all this means is I can flip up my armrest lid, turn on my scanner, start a band or programmed-channel search, and roll down the highway with good strong amplified audio.
I want to eventually grow myself a small "antenna farm" when I get the time and can set up a good diplexer or switching capability to have all the antenna's feeding into a single line to the scanner. Check out yahoo's New Scanner/Antenna list for more info about this stuff.
