Subject: Wheel Bearing Noise IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1999 Dakota Sport, 3.9L, 2 wheel drive that has developed what sounds like a wheel bearing noise. I have been hearing horror stories about ball joints going bad and was wondering if this could be the problem The driver's side has an awful "growl" noise that actually sounds like rocks being ground up and the truck has a pull to the right. I have checked the tire pressures and they are all on the money. Any help would be appreciated.

Message: hi tom
does this growl sound at any speed and in a strightline or only when you turn left / right. i
have a 2000 quad cab 3.9l 2wd and my right front
hub is making a growling when i trun left/right.
i hear it about 40 mph and up but, not in a stright line. i heard the hubs bearings are suppose to last 100,000 miles. these bearings are not replacable or greasable you got to buy the whole hub assy.
i just bought 2 hubs with 2 new spindle nuts.(the nuts are none re-useable).the hubs were 110.00 each and the nuts were 11.50 each.(had to go to 3 different dealers to buy all the stuff the same day).i have heared dealers can charge different prices for the hubs.
i will be installing the hubs soon, hope this helps. gunboat

Message: jack the truck up ,spin the offending wheel by hand, then do the wiggle test , if it growels and feels wiggly pull the wheel of take your index finger put the tip on the hub and rest the center of you finger on the nut ,with the other hand agian wiggle the hub you well feel the play right of , your allowed .003 to .005 thousandths of an inch for play. and thats very little.

Message: Thanks for the input fellas. I have stock rims on the truck. The noise is very bad while going straight at slow speed. When I get up to higher speeds, it sounds like a flat spot on the tire, but the tires have only 5000 miles on them and no flat spots. I rotated the tires and the noise is still there. The noise doesn't get any worse or better when turning.

Message: This subject is interesting to me because, when I steer slighty to the left it sounds as if I am running mudding tires. The faster I go the more it vibrates. At 70 mph or so, it will rattle the change in my center console. I have since rotated tires, replaced driver side hub, and spindle, have new ball joints all the wat around. I have also replaced pass side hub assembly. Someone mentioned diff in prices, I paid 220.00 for each side. I am at a loss any ideas?
