Subject: Help. Loud transfer case noise IP: Logged
Message: Help. Anyone else had problems with their transfer case on a 2001 4.7L, 5sp QC. It sounds like a bunch of marbles rolling around in the transfer case whenever I put it in 4WD. Sounds worse in reverse. It almost sounds like the 4WD isn't engaging all the way. Also, there is a lot of slop in the front axle shaft as it enters the transfer case. Is this going to cost me thousands of dollars, or is it something simple. The last thing I want to do is bring it back to that rip-off dealer where I bought the truck. My back side is still sore from the last screwin I took from them. (Bonniville - Manchester, NH)

Message: the slop alone is a tell tale sign that the bearing has spun out. the marbles you hear are most likely the balls in the bearing.
a grand should cover the repair, check out your local wrecking yard may be able to pick up a used one for half that and stuff it in yourself. its not that difficult ,but dont use the 4 wheel in the mean time ,a transfer case and tranny aint gonna be cheap

Message: It's probably the front axle shaft making the noise. The boot broke and the grease got out and the dirt got in . It destroys the trunion joint. Check that before you buy a trans.Just don't drive the truck without the front axles installed. The hubs are held in by the axle.

Message: I agree with the bearings and maybe someone can help me. I have just put a new transmission in my 1999 Ram 1500 and within 63 miles of driving it a LOUD winding noise is coming from my transfer case from time to time, what would cause that?

Message: Try sloppy shifter from hi to low. Next time you hear this, try pushing the leaver farther into high range and let off then back on the gas. if it stops do some adjusting on the shifter or replace worn parts
