Subject: nv3500 decent for towing? Swap trans Q's
IP: Logged

Message:
The truck is a '96 Dakota Sport, standard cab that I'm getting for dirt cheap from a friend. Nothing wrong with it, except it's slow... and in fifth gear it can't even move out of it's own way.

My previous question about trading out this weak ass 2.5 for a V8 surfaced some interesting tranny questions. And no, I don't want to swap to an auto.

#1. The nv3500 tranny is supposedly what is used on the V6 and 318 V8 daks, correct? The nv4500 is from a 1500 ram etc. What kind of fitment issues would I have if I ran a 360 with the nv4500? (Like firewall, crossmembers etc)

#2. if I decided to run a 318 and the nv3500, would I have issues with towing? As in eventually problems staying in gear, over heating etc?

I'm not going to be towing anything more than a one car, dual axel, open "car carrier" trailer with a 3000 lb car on it... but I'll be towing it (hopefully) at least once or twice a month. I'd like to have enough power to make things easy. This will also probably be my daily driver, or at least split the duties 50/50 with something else.

Any suggestions?

First of all. The NV 4500 is not even an option on the Ram 1500 trucks. But if you going to tow under 6500 lbs. The 5 speed you got would be perfect. Also much capable than the auto most owners got.

I think they use the NV3500 in the 1500 model I beleive V6 come w/ the NV1500 or the AX15 my 5.2L dak has the NV3500 which is the heavy duty option a 4.7 5 speed dak 4x4 cc can haul 5,050 lbs w/ 3.55 gears and 1000lbs more w/ 3.92. I think the 5.2 can haul more because it has more low end tourque. hope this helps

What I'm looking for is a decent 5 speed towing package that I would LIKE to toss in with a 360 into a 96 Dakota.

What it all boils down to is this:

Do you guys have any suggestions?

Uh, Yeah. Just get you a pre Ram 2500 with a 360 or a big 488 V10 mated to the big NV4500 and tow all you want.

If you want to tow somthing over 3 tons your better of with fullsize truck because the Dakota was built to tow so much.

I'm really only towing a trailer and one car. That's it. I just want excess power to do it with, :)

There were some questions about whether the nv3500 would bolt to a 360, and if it would hold up.

Your Dakota might could pull that faily well. But If you want a truck with a 360 engine for pulling. I would recomend getting a used Durango or a 1/2 ton Ram. The Durango has a more stiffer chassie and the Ram is buit stronger all together. But it just depends who much weight you want to pull.

I'm sure that the 3500 would bolt up to a 360 but it wouldn't hold up for long. The NV3500-4500 are the type trannies. Just that a 4500 is a beefed up 3500. And also the gear ratio are lower (1st,4.10:1 vs 5.71:1)

So a 4500 would fit in there ok? Someone mentioned "firewall" modification.

I would get a larger truck, but I'm getting the Dak for so damn cheap, that even AFTER the motor swap I'm still way under the price of a larger, more powerful truck.

Besides, I like smaller, lightweight, powerful toys for driving around. A 360 in a dak with a few mods to it should be fun, right? :)
