 Subject: MIL light "driving cycles"

My MIL light came on last night, I checked the gas cap, that was tight, checked the air filter, pretty dirty, I just replaced it. I know it'll stay on for 3 driving cycles, but what is considered a driving cycle?
Also, is it possible to check the codes w/o buying a special tool? (I got DMMs around)

2002. Just found how to get the codes. (turn the key on-off 3 times), got the code P0456 (small evap leak). I'm thinking the gasket on the gas cap isn't sealing or something.

18-016-02 MAY 02 Engine Controls - MIL ON/False DTC P0456 (EVAP)
Anyone have any details on it? And would it be warrentee covered (24k miles)?
