Message: Just wondering if anyone else's oil pressure goes down to the lower end of normal (around 30) at idle. Then it goes back up to around 60 when moving. Should I be out there replacing the pump and can that be done it the rig, 98 5.2 4x4.
I haven't totally freaked on this yet as it stays in the normal band on the gauge.
Thanks for your experience.

Message: That is normal. When your engine speed slows down so does the oil pump. 30 is still ok at idle and 60 is very good.

Message: Thanks, guess I'm just not used to REAL gauges. Most of my other cars I've had that actually had a gauge just popped straight up to mid normal and stayed there.

Message: I have the same thing going on. The first 800 miles it stayed at the max end of normal range. Now that I have 1135 miles on it it hovers around the midle range at idle and max end of normal above idle. I too am not used to guages. I will be watching this closely.

Message: My 99 5.2 goes from good oil pressure to when I stop ( just once in a while ) will go down to nothing and then bounce back up. The engine never misses a beat and runs smooth. Is this a short, or something more? It just does this at an idle, but like I said not all the time with any consistancy.

I took a closer look at my 2001 CC SLT 4x4 3.9 and it doesn't have any numbers on the oil
guage. Just the slashes. Not that I really mind, but I just thought I would pass that along.

Message: Randy
Just recently my gauge is doing the same thing.
'94, 3.9, 4x4
On the road, the gauge stays midrange.
When stopped it flutters and then falls right down to nuttin' and the oil light comes on.
But also like yours, this is not consistant. Tommorrow the gauge might register perfect all the time, idle or driving.
Might be a faulty oil pressure sending unit.
It keeps me guessing all the time.

Any word yet on what was done to correct the problem.
Did I also mention that my engine also has that terrible timing chain, (as far as I know from reading some of the other messages here), rattle.

Message: I havent had any problem with my Dak,but my mom has an 88 suburban that had a low oil pressure reading, close to zero! But it ran normally and made no noise,so I though maybe it was oil sender or gauge. It was,oil sender was replaced and its fine now.

Message: As long as it's reading I believe 10 psi per 1000rpm then your fine. When mine was bad it never moved just sat at the minimum OK unless I put it to the floor and then it would shoot up and take 5 miles to go back to where it was.

Message: To All,
I have a 94 Dakota and have a fluctuation of oil pressure at low speeds. I to see the oil light come on. I am thinking bad sensors, but do not have a manual, and am asked how many sensors their are. Any help in letting me know where the sensors are and how many on a 94 six cylinder is appreciated.

Message: I've read lots of posts on here about oil pressure, different kinds of oil and filters. Here's my experience:
'97 Dakota, 3.9 V6, automatic
when I bought the truck new I always went back to the dealer to buy Mopar oil and filters. I figured they were the best since they came from the people who built the truck. I did this for a year or so, then a friend of mine told me his father told him years ago that Valvoline oil was originally developed for use in Chrysler vehicles, that stuck in my mind since I'm a "car nut". Several months later I saw the "Valvoline National Driving Test" on TV, some of you may have seen it (abt. 1999) During that show there was an interview with the President of Valvoline Company, he was interviewed while driving in his car, he was driving a Chrysler, looked like a Fifth Avenue, and I remembered what my friend had said. I thought some more about it, then switched to Valvoline oil, it was easier to get. My truck has 92,000 miles on it now, and uses no oil. I continued trying to use Mopar oil filters, but most of the time when I was off work the parts dept. at the dealership was closed. I tried other brands, every time I used some other brand my oil pressure acted strange, almost always low as soon as I started the truck after the oil change, wouldn't stay in the normal range, sometimes going down the highway it would drop down to about 20 psi. then come back up to a little over 40 after a few minutes which is the normal range for it. This happens with virtually every brand of filter except Mopar, even with the Mobil 1 filter, which should be gold plated for what they charge for it. Not as bad with the Mobil 1 but still a little eratic. I started looking at the oil filters close, the Mopar filter has 8 large holes at the end, most the rest look about like Fram, 6 small holes, some have one hole that is a little bigger. The Mobil 1 is the closest one to the configuration of the Mopar filter as far as the holes go, but I know what's inside the filter has an effect on the oil flow also. I've come to believe that most of this eratic oil pressure is just a matter of restricted oil flow at times. Till I can find one that flows as good a the Mopar filter I guess I'll just keep using it, and changing my oil every 3,000 miles.
Just my 2 cents worth

Message: My 97 Dakota does the same thing with the oil pressure. My mecahnic told me that it is normal not to worry about it. Its just the engine and the way Dodges are. Mine started acting up at 62000 miles. I am not as worried now that I see other people have the same thing happening to them, but I will update if anything becomes of it.

Message: I have had this 99 Dodge Ram 1500 conversion van with the 318 5.2 liter, and it has had the same oil pressure problem when at idle (drops to zero)since summer 2001. Two dealers have told me it is the sending unit. Both have CND'd the problem. I have put 2 sending units on this engine in the last two years to no avail. I think it is the pump. I'm getting a pressure check tomorrow. If it turns out the oil pump is bad, I will follow up with a leak down test. That way I can tell the stupid dealership whether to replace my oil pump or put in a new engine. I'll follow up later this week.
