Subject: The next Dakota.. IP: Logged
Message: Well I've been hearing some rumors that the new D body dakota will be getting smaller and might not be equipped with just a V6. And this new 3.7 L (225) is just a flat out joke! I don't care if it does have 35 extra HP; where the tourqe??? You see there, smaller engines just produce less tourqe which means less towing capablebility.
And also about this new Hemi. Did you know its only 50 % Hemi? In order for it to be a realhemi. It should have Hemi heads. And having to rev all the way to 4,400 RPMs for a truck engine is crazy! Now for a car that would be just the thing.

Message: This could have been a better idea. Instid of takeing the smaller 287 v8 and chopping of the last two cylinders just like the did the 318 to get the last Gen. v6. Just refine the 4.0 litre powertech I6. Or they could have came back out with the 4.2 I6. These are none to be very durable and stout motors. Also, look at it this away. GM really raised the bar on 6 banger performance with there new 4.2 DOHC I6. 270 HP from a engine like that sounds sweet. Also I've talked to some Envoy and Trailblaxer owners and there very impressed with the fuel economy.
I think this is the route that Chrysler should have taken. but Chrysler no longer exist sadly. But anyway. I think that refine version of the Jeep staight 6 would have been a great base motor option for the Ram,Dakota and the Durango.
Just my thoughts.

Message: 270 hp but no torque. That engine is a joke.
The 4.7 is a smaller displacement than the 5.2 but still has the same horsepower and torque.

Message: Doesn't the front axle run thru the oil pan on the 4.2 DOHC I6? I saw a picture of this engine and there is a big hole on both sides of the oil pan. GM engines don't last. I had the Quad 4 engine (also DOHC) in my old Grand Am. That engine puked it's guts after only 60,000 miles. The warranty costs for the Quad 4 killed GM.

Message: the quad four was a mistake that GM should have had an abortion on after the first few years... now the tech 4 was a reliable yet puny 4cyl... but look at the 4.3L from GM. prolly one of the best v6s out there in terms of reliability/mpg/power

Message: Yes I believe the inline six is the way to go. Naturally balanced, hell we have a great starting block with either the 4.0L jeep or the old slant six. I'm not a fan of the 3.7L either. More Hp but only 10 more lbs/ft of torque. Have to ring the crap out of it to get power. As for the 5.7L not being a true hemi, it has hemi heads! Much better design than the old hemi. Also, Hemi's always make their power a little higher up in the rev range. A 440 would beat any hemi off the line, but by the end of the quarter mile the hemi would blow by it.

Message: The heads on the new "Hemi" engine are Hemispherical. It's not just a marketing gimmick.

Message: Well, I was told by the dealer and also form Trucktren.com that this new 348 cubic incher only has a Hemispherical combustion chamber. They Heads or more like the ones on the 4.7 (287) V8. Hence the name Hemi magnum. It should also be mentioned that Chrysler motors back in '98 was going to begin production of this engine back in '01. But set back kept that from happing.
