Subject: 3:55 to 3:92 Gears IP: Logged
Message: The dealership wants $579 for the 3:92 gears. I though that was excessive. Anyone know of a alternate source??
Does anyone have experience here to comment on the change in MPG with the lower gears?

Message: I paid slightly less than $500 for gears and install at a very well known drivetrain shop in Houston. They installed Motive Gears. They have been in for 20M miles and I have had no problems.
I had priced the Dealer at over $1000. DUH!
Shop around at REPUTABLE places. You can get a much better price on parts and labor than at the Dealer. Installing rear gears is best done by an experienced person. If not done correctly, you will likely have excessive rear end noise and early gear failure.
I went from 3.55s to 4.10s (highly recommended!!!!!!!!!) and did not notice any chnage in gas mileage. However most of my driving is in town. If you do a lot of highway driving, you mpg will decrease.

Message: Thanks for response,
Yes, including labor, the dealer wanted $1,104!!!! $579 for parts and $525 for labor.
Crazy!
The 3:55 and 3:92 were available from factory, I did not consider 4:10s. I need to seee how that will effect RPM.
My '02 QC 4x4 4.7L AWD pulls 14.7MPH on every tank full. Milage varies VERY little from city to hwy or even with pulling my motorcycle trailer. I have 10k miles on the truck and I am still disgusted with the fuel efficiency.
I will consider a 4:10 swap instead of the 3:92s. I wonder how much father that will bump up the trucks tow capacity? I situation is that I want to purchase a travel trailer. I would have been better off with a 1/2 ton pickup.

Message: Boom, I too have an 02 QC 4.7 auto with 3.55 gears. I'm also looking at buying a travel trailer. You might want to look at the Aerolite trailers made by Thor (www.aero-rv.com). Their heavist trailer only weighs around 4,500 lbs dry. That's well under the 6,000 lb capacity you'd have with the 3.92 gears. They have several 25' trailers in the 3,500 lb range.

Message: I scored a 3.92 ring and pinion off E-bay for $60... you might check there, I have seen them listed there from time to time. Bought an install kit at 4WheelParts for $100 and then paid a local diff mechanic $180 for install. He also told me to pick up a new set of axle bearings, since he would have to remove the axles to install the gears and, with 65,000 miles, I might as well replace them, too. New axle bearings only cost me $12 at AutoZone. All told, my cost was about $350. He did a fantastic job on the install, too. Only took about 2-3 hours and rear was quiet as a mouse when I picked it up. If you are anywhere near Oklahoma City, I can give you his name and number... I highly recommend him and you can't beat the price and service.

Message: Andrew,
I had looked at the aerolites, most other companies also have liteweight models. Did you find it confusing that each manufacturer (fleetwood, thor, etc.) likes to carry several model lines under different names?
I'm trying to give myself atleast 1000lb of head room on the tow weight for 2 motorcycles, water, supplies, etc.
As you know, the truck is only 4750lbs with the 3.55s and 5750lbs with the 3.92's
Given that, my max travel trailer weight should be around 4700lbs once I get the gears in. With the 3.55s I am pretty much SOL unless I get a 18-19 ft trailer. I really like the 27s w/slides but I am trying to focus on a 22-24 footer.

Message: I heard that in 2000 Dodge changed to a different front axle than the 97-99's. The 97-99 had a Dana 35 front, and 2000 and up have a new Chysler 8inch front axle.
Are you guys doing gear swaps with 4x4s working with the Dana or the Chysler 8"?
