Subject: Oil and Moisture Diplacement??
IP: Logged

Message:
I recently recieved my Dak back from Body Shop. I think that some coolant might have contaminated the oil. They had to rplace radiator, oil cooler, trans cooler, condenser, fenders, hood........ So the truck was drieven about 60 miles before I thought of this. I did not see any symptoms of water contamanation until. I decided to change oil to be safe. So I drained the oil while draining the first 4 table spoons that trikeled out where clear water and none of the oil had any milky emulsion in it. Is their anything to add to the oil that would displace any other moisture that might be in the system? I am also woundering about trany? How well does trany fluid prevent water damage in a trany. I know that water will destroy the friction material on the clutch's. Would something like WD40 or Marvels grab hold of the water. I hate like hell to have to pull the pan. I can not afford any trany fluid until this comeing friday. I did not see any emulsion in the trany fluid on dip stick.

Why take a chance. Yeah its some work drop'n the pan, but not nearly as much work or expensive as a rebuild. I won't drive it till I get it changed either.

Sandman,

My suggestion would be to drain all fluids, sample and analyze, and replace all fluids and filters. I know it is expensive and may be prohibitive, so do what you want. Stay away from WD40 ... it is only a surface displacer.

Regarding the Transmission, I would absolutely get the transmission fluid analyzed. If there is evidence of water in there ... take the report and go right back to the Body Shop and see what they are going to do about it. If nothing, go back to the insurance adjuster. If somehow water/coolant got into the transmission, it will most likely have caused some damage.

Keep me posted.

Well I figure it it is proably a bit late now! It was driven about 60 miles before I thought of it. I will have to wait until I can afford to buy the fluids and filters. I only have 21,000 on the truck right now and it still has 15 mounths left on the warranty. I am going to have to take the calculated risk. I am hopeing that if their was a breach of the trans cooler that the high presure side failed. If high pressure side failed then their would not be any pressure to force contaminated fluid into the trany and the coolant and trany fluid would have taken the path of least resistance onto the ground. I did not see any trany fluid leakage after the acident just coolant leakage(which means nothing). Does the dodge Dak use a trany cooler built into the radiator then an aux.air only cooler in front of radiator before heading back to trany? This is when you hope you have an air only cooler. I have always hated the primary cooler being a water cooling unit before heading to an air only aux. cooler. The OEM set up is almost always like this. I will have to take a sample and send it off. I have an oil sample that has been sitting around for a couple of mounths because it is always a decision between sending it off, buying diapers or gas to get to work. So far Diaper for my twins boys and gas for work have won out! Steven can I sample from the fill tube? I hate to pull the pan if I do not have too! If they sold $1.50 quarts of ATF+4 I would not be haveing this discussion but 6-8 quarts of any ATF+4 plus filters is a huge sum for me. I have to save up over the course of 3-4 pay checks to afford this if I am lucky.

Sandman,
Additional helpful information:

Coolant Leaks Into Engine Oil

Any interior leakage of coolant into the lubricating oil in an engine can cause serious damage to the engine. Some examples of areas where coolant could enter the oil are:

1. Damaged head gasket
2. Cracked head
3. Cracked block (and with heavy duty engines)
4. Leaking oil cooler
5. Leaking cylinder inner seals
6. Leaking injector seals

Coolant causes the lube oil to change chemically as indicated by the milky appearance of the oil. Then it does not provide the high lubricity required between close tolerance parts, thus causing friction heat. The heat causes more oil deterioration. Sludge begins to form, interfering with:

1. Positive operation of lubrication system pressure regulator valves and by-pass valve.

2. Oil filtration suffers as filter material becomes plugged. The filter may even experience such high pressure differential that interior parts may collapse.

This contaminated lube oil does not properly lubricate bearings. The first effect is excessive wear to internal engine parts. The oil does not provide the film strength needed between the rod and main bearings and the crankcase journals. High temperature friction melts and welds the bearing surfaces to the journals.

Check the coolant level regularly. Also, check the coolant recovery tank level. With a cold engine, the fluid level should be near the "COLD LEVEL" mark. If, with regular checking, additional fluid is needed to maintain the proper coolant level, then a coolant leak is likely.

The problem then is to determine whether this is an internal leak or an external leak.

Corrective action should be taken immediately especially if there is an internal leak.

A simple, quick, and cheap test to check for water contamination in your oil. Cut a beer (or soda) can down to an inch or so, put it over a candle or lighter, and put a few drops of the oil in question in it. If is sizzles or pops, it has water.

Shady thanks I will try that. I felt like an idiot even asking. I was hopeing that chemical engineering would be able to save the day!
