Message: So, just wondering what the mechs opinions are. How often should you change oil on your 6cyl. Dak, I've been told 3,000; 5,000; and as much as 7,000 miles. Just wondering what everyone thinks.
My driving is mainly highway and city...no off road.
Cheers

Message: DCC is kinda funny 'bout this subject...I've seen the 7000 b/s too and I've seen DCC turn down claims for "lack of timely maintence". I work for a Dodge shop and wouldn't use nothing but a good syn oil and a decent filter BEFORE 3000 MILES (my vote/opinion). I've had a few turbo-charged engines apart (from too much psi blowing the gasket apart when things got too hot) and a super-charged cebby and couldn't believe except for the terminal damage how good these things were for 120,000 plus some miles, know how strong they ran and how hard they had been run. RAOTFLMAO! I'd rather buy the syn oil, do it alittle more than necessary and tell everyone go 7000 miles and come to me later on. LOL really I tell them 'DO THE RIGHT THING'....Ya give her h*ll....,using syn sure ain't gonna hurt every 3/4 k.... and looks good when resell time occurs, not to be confused with trade in or like me have them last forever

Message: Dureing warranty period use the schedule that best matches your driveing style. Once out of warranty it is a bit trickier. If you Brand of oil and filter support extended drains and use oil sampleing the possabilities start to shoot up quite a bit. Synthetics with the right additive package open up the door to some realy long extended drain intervals. You are only abuseing the engine if the oil is no longer good. If it is still doing it's job and is not loaded with water, acid, soot, metal shaveing then why change it? The Military and most large flee operations only change when oil sampleing says it is time; they no longer use a fixed change time. The vechiles last just a s long but your maintence costs go done dramaticly.

Message: I bought my '90 with 60k miles on it. It now has 305k+ miles on the original engine (3.9l) with no internal bearing or cylinder work. The oil pressure is about 55 psi warm at idle, and it passes So. Cal Smog Check every year. It uses about 1/2 qt. between 3,000 mile oil changes (most of wich is leakage). I found that Fram PH8A filters fit (barely)> This filter is about twice as big as the correct filter, so it may have contributed to the incredible life I've gotten from the engine so far.
Bigger filter, change the oil every 3,000!

Message: Well, I'm an expert. and......oh no, don't, oh well, .......If you have a stock v6 dak,
Don't, repeat, don't change the oil.
then, it'll blow up and you can get a v8, that is as much or more MPG, and more HP!!
And take a grain of salt too.

Message: Texas Todd,
Good idea..LOL, I still kind of regret not getting the V-8 at the time, but, just didn't want to spend so much cash at the time. Now, my truck is paid in full and I say to myself, sh*%, I could of gone another year or so on payments for the V-8. Oh well, I still have fun with my add-ons and my V-6 Dakota.
Cheers!!!
