Subject: Dog?? Low power! IP: Logged
Message: I've got a '90 Dakota extra cab with 305,000+ miles on it and so went to the dealer to try out an '02 Quad Cab. What a dog! I thought it had a four-cylinder engine, but it had the 4.2 liter.
My question is, can I expect a new 4.2l to underperform my worn-out 3.9l, or was this truck a fluke? I drove a full-size, and it hauled as*.
If low power from factory is normal, can I get a performance chip for it?
Thanks for any replies,
KenJ

Message: Ken, if the QC you drove had a V8 in it, it was either a 4.7 or a 5.9...Dodge doesn't build a 4.2. 4.7 is a new design engine, while the 5.9 is very old. Dodge is putting their new 345HP HEMI into Ram 1500's now...you might want to look into one of those.

Message: Boy, do I feel stupid! Coulda sworn the salesman said 4.2! Guess I shoulda looked at the engine sticker myself.
I'd like to get a fullsize, but it won't fit in my garage. With all the paint complaints, I don't really wnat my truck to live outside in the desert sun.
Tanks for the reply, Pistolero!

Message: You had to have test drove a v-6. The 4.7 in the quad cab is very quick and has plenty of power. If it was the 4.7, go to a Ford or Chevy dealer and see how pathetically slow their 4 door trucks are with much larger motors. There is no comparison.

Message: I myself went from a '99 CC with the 3.9 V6 to a '02 QC with the 4.7 V8. It's like night and day man. It is a fast truck (it's no Lightning Killer by any means mind you, but it is fast). Sure, it's the heaviest Dak you can get, but the 4.7 rockets it around nicely. There's no contest between the two.

Message: No, I swear, i looked at the engine, and it was a V-8! I'm gonna try a couple more trucks to see what's up.
Hey, is there a power chip or programmer available for the 4.7?
Does K&N make a filter for it?

Message: i had a 93 dakota and i currently own a 2K , my 93 would have ran circles around my 2K.
but theres a big difference between the trucks. my 93 was plain jane ppower steering and 4spd auto, short box. my 2000, has a few toys ,A/C, box cap, and so on .its also about 900 lbs heavier than my little 93, sitting on the dealers lot
