Message: Check the EGR valve operation. On my '90, it's located on top of the intake manifold on the driver's side just below the air cleaner. If it's the same as mine, you can take a flashlight and shine it horizontally at the bottom of the metal valve diaphragm body- there you might see a small vertical rod.
With the engine at normal operating temp, and watching the valve stem rod, rev the engine from idle. You should see the rod move up (opening the EGR valve).
If it doesn't move, get a vacuum tester pump, disconnect the vacuum hose from the black plastic pressure transducer, and connect the vacuum pump tool. Apply a few inches of vacuum, checking for valve movement. Also check for leakage.
If all that checks out, remove the pressure transducer and CAREFULLY pry it apart. Watch how the guts come apart. Often if a 3.9l is driven with a cold engine or stop-and-go, the tranducer plugs up with carbon. If it's plugged, clean it out (no solvents) and put it back in. Retest.
If the above parts are ok individually, check the vacuum control solenoid. You can find it by tracing the vacuum diagram under the hood. Check the coil with an ohm meter (DO NOT apply 12 volts battery power- it'll burn out) for an open coil.
Also the throttle position sensor may be bad, or the manifold absolute pressure sensor. Neither of these are easily tested withot an engine scan tool.
Most truck / 4X4 magazines advertise cheap engine scanners / analyzers. It may be cheaper than taking it to a shop, but not faster.
Good luck.
