Subject: Low(er) oil pressure IP: Logged
Message: I noticed that the oil pressure gauge on my 01 Dakota QC 4.7l began registering lower than usual. (Still within the normal operating range, though.) Took it to the dealer under warranty (approx 33k miles). They checked the sender, the strainer, and put a mechanical pressure gauge on it. They thought that the Fram TG-16 filter may be the source of the pressure difference. With the Fram installed it was putting out 65 psi at idle and 80 psi at 2000 rpm. They put in a Mopar filter -- 65 psi at idle, 92 psi at 2000 rpm. I always thought that if you changed the filter every 3000 miles it didn't make a lot of difference what you used. Suffice to say, I won't be putting in another Fram. Sorry for the long post. Regards, Steve

This is an interesting post. I have seen a rather long thread in the warranty issues boards,
about 4.7's, with low or no oil pressure, and engines seizing!
These were usually 2000's, and the people had receipts of the oil changes, etc.
Tehy were told taht is was improperly maintained, and had 'sludge' in the engine.
Needless to say they were pretty pissed, especially when they could prove they kept there oil changes to specs!
My 4.7 usuall always stays at the upper hash mark on the gauge, I run Mobil 1, with a Wix filter. I am still concerned though, if others had problems, I might too. Keep us posted.

Message: My 03 qc 4.7 auto 1500 miles always reads exactly half way on gauge, normal? Running penzoil 5-30 and(yikes!) fram extra guard filter. Did this with oem filter too. Doesnt seem to rise or drop.

Message: I have a 2001 Dakota with a 4.7 Magnum V8. When I first start the truck the oil pres. reads up to the high hash mark. This reading will stay that way even after engine reaches operating temp. When the truck is at temp and at idle the presure will fall back down to mid range. When the engine is above idle the presure goes back up to the high hash mark. Does anyone else have this problem? The dealer told me this was normal, but every oil presure gage I have seen the oil pres reads in mid range and never changes regardless of engine speed.

Message: I have a 1995 5.2L and it is not unusual to see some change in pressure. After warmup and at idle, my gauge stays near the middle of the range. At speed (40mph, 1800rpm), the gauge is somewhere around 8 tenths of the full range (almost same for a cold start). I have never seen my engine go full range on the gauge (normal range for 5.2L is 30 to 80 psi). What viscosity oil are you using? How regular are your oil changes and in what condition is the used oil? What filter are you using (some cheaper filters will block up - especially if you go to a quick oil change place)? Is this a new phenomenon you have noticed?

Message: I have a 2002 4.7 running AMSOIL 10w -40.My oil pressure is at the top hash mark at normal driving but will drop down to half or quarter at idle. I use the long drain interval oil (24,000 mile) with the AMSOIL filter which I change at 12,000 miles. It is usual for the pressure to drop at idle. As long as it comes up above idle is the thing to watch for. The truck is running great.Usual shi**y front brakes and possible left ball joint.

Dr. D
This is normal when using a PAO based synthetic oil,. They flow better than petroleum oils and therefore sometimes give a lower pressure at the gauge.

Message: My '02 4.7 came with dino from the factory. At 3000 mi I switched to syn at the dealer, they were using mobil at the time. They had mobil for the next change and then at 9000 mi they used valvoline. Well, at 16000 mi, I changed it myself and put Amsoil.
With all the other lubes, my pressure was at the 3/4 mark at start and only dropped off at Idle, or a VERY hot day and long drive. At idle it went to about 1/2 guage and at travel it dropped just off the 3/4 mark. With the Amsoil, it starts at the 3/4 mark and almost immediately drops off to just touching, but never moves from there hot or cold, except at idle.

Thanks PeeDee,
One of the many benefits of using Amsoil Synthetic Motor Oils! I have posted enough on this subject in the past so I will just let the readers relax for a change.
Amsoil Synthetic Motor Oils & Lubricants are fuel efficient, extended life lubricants manufactured from select synthetic base stocks and special purpose additives. These lubricants provide improved overall performance characteristics when compared to conventional petroleum oils and/or other synthetic oils.

Message: I have the same problem with the oil pressure dropping to the lowest point when i am stopped but then going half way up when i idle. I took it to the dealership and they supposedly put in a new engine. But after having my truck for a month to do this it still fluctuates.

Message: I've read in a post here before that it's normal for it to drop off at idle, for emmission reasons. As someone said above, at long as it's in up during driving, it should be okay. My 4.7 does the same, at the high has when cold, once warm and at idle, drops to almost the low hash but as soon as you step on the gas, goes back to the high has again.

Message: Even if the pressure drops, I wouldn't worry about it. You have an aftermarket oil pressure gauge? Engines only need 10psi for every thousand rpm. When an oil filter flows better, know what that means? Bigger holes in the filter media, which let bigger particles through. The only way around that is to use more media. I use Purolator Pure One PL3001. That's a filter like the PH8A. Bigger than the stock.
