Subject: 4.10's or 4.56's IP: Logged
Message: 02 dakota, I have done all of the basic mods. 20's to come in a few months and I think the last and final mod will be gears. More dakotas have upgraded to the 4.10's but being that I am not lifted, but lowered, how would it be if I was to drop 4.56's in the rear end?

Message: if it is a auto trans, go for it!! i know a few RT guys who put 4.56's in, and they love them.
if its a 5 speed, its a toss up between the 3.92's and 4.10's it just depends on what size tire you are running.

Message: Just remember you will be taching around 3 grand at 70. I am at 2500 with the 4.10's which isn't too bad. It does take away from your top end power too, or it did on mine, but is probably the most impressive mod, for the money, that you can really feel.

Message: It depends on the engine/tranny too. The 360/318 guys will see 3000rpm at 80mph, which is not a huge jump from stock (approx. 400)
I think the 4.10 is the max to use in the 4.7L and V6 trucks.

Message: We are running about the same diameter tires on the rear and with my 3.92s my rpm is at 1850 at 65mph. The new rears dropped my gear ratio down to about a 3.60 so I can only guess that by going to 4.56s it will actually give me around a 4.20 or so. Another guess on my part is that they will put me at about 2400rpms at 65mph and no more than that....but I could be off.

Message: Hey, i was wondering how different diameters of tires change the gear ratios??? Kota, you said if you have a 5-speed its a toss up between the 3.92 or 4.10, just depends on tires size. Im planning on droping my dak, and the diameter of tire will probably end up being smaller, butI only have 3.55 right now. How can i figure out which gear ratio i should be wanting??

Message: I made a little spread sheet that might come in handy for some of you guys. I used one of the free gear ratio calcs on the web so take it with a grain of salt.
I have 265/70/16 tires.
but alas I have a 4x4 and no one makes an after market gear set for the front diff.
I hope this helps you decide.
I have a 4.7 so I ran the revs up to 6K.
I think optimal shift point is about 5800 but I am no drag king (or queen for that matter)

Message: 215/75/r15 Or equivalent size(27.7)
4.56s in OD 2290 rpms@60mph
4.10s in OD 2059 RPMS@60MPH
OD off 3.55 gears 2584 rpms@60mph
A change in tire size can cut the difference between gears or even correct the speedo after a gear change.
Example:
215/75R15(27.7")/3.55s in OD=1782rpms@60mph
32" tire/4.10 gears in OD=1782@60mph
If your going to go to a smaller tire choose the lower# gear 4.10s over the 4.56s. A change from 215/75r15(my stock size) to 255/45r17(26"dia.) will make the 4.10 gears feel like 4.36s.
A good comparison calculator for tire/gear changes can be found at

Message: The '97 and newer daks will automatically correct the speedo after a gear change, but won't for tire changes. As far as gears and which to buy, I bought a set of 4.10s for my '00 R/T. Mainly due to the fact I will be running a 27" tire(1" shorter than stock) on my truck which will give me a 4.2x final gear ratio, and also the fact that I just bought 26" slicks right bwefore the gears and 4.56 gears with 26" sicks woudl give me a final rear gear of 4.76 which woudl be way to much and require me to shift into OD before the end of the 1/4 or bounce off the rev limiter. For a good source for determining the difference tire sizes make, go to www.dakota-truck.net and scroll down toards bottom to the Tire and wheel calculator. You can convert metric to inch sizes, and also compare different tire sizes to each other to see how it will effect speedo error, RPMs, and gear ratios.
