Subject: Cast or Hypereutectic Pistons ?? IP: Logged
Message:
I am having a 3.9L V-6 rebuilt and need some input on which pistons to use, the rebuilder claims that the cast pistons will hold up just fine in a stock engine.
The only thing that I plan on doing is romping on it every once in a while and doing some moderate duty towing.
I need some input !

Message: Dr D, Go with Forged! Most cast are garbage. Most factory pistons are Hyper. Get some good flat top Forged Pistons, lightweight rods and nice cam in the 500" lift range.

Message: Forged is definately the way to go, youre tearing into the motor, you might as well make it worth your while, put the best components you can afford or are willing to spend into your motor. you never know, romping on it might be more fun with a fresh motor, i guarantee if you put a mild cam and quality parts in youll be more than satisifed, plus you wont have to worry about it dying on you any time soon

Message: D,
To be honest, forged parts are expensive and you really don't need them unless you plan to use forced induction/nitrous. Cast will be fine for normal everyday use. If you want the extra piece of mind... go with the hypereutectic, but it will cost you a little more and is really not needed. The stock hypereutectic pistons are almost indestructable, unless you get too crazy with the boost/gas.

Message: The factory pistons in the 3.9L, 5.2L, and 5.9L engines are hyperuetectics....
Don't waste you time with cast, when you can get Keith Blakc silv-o-ltes for pretty darn cheap, and they can handle some punishment...
If you plan on running a lot of nitrous or boost, or both, then you should consider forged pistons...

Message: Hypereutectic Pistons are cast. The hypereutectic part tells you that they have a high concentration of silicone in the alloy. I think it has to have a minium of 14%-17% silicone to be considered hypereutectic. The silicone makes the pistons alot harder then standard cast pistons and they are alot more thermal stable. They are a big improvment over most OEM pistons. Alot of modern engines includeing our 4.7 and the new 5.7 hemi use this type of piston. If you are thinking of ever useing forced induction or nitrious then you should use forged. JE Pistons and TRW are the two brands I use most often. I use TRW and JE and Mahler are my favorite piston companies for forged pistons. If you want Hyper then Keith black offer a good product at a fair price. I would not even think about putting a cast piston in any of my vechiles unless it was Hyper. Use moly rings and felpro gaskets. For the head use copper head gasket. It will not blow out under most conditions and can be reused 3-5 times.
