Subject: Abs and brake light???? IP: Logged
Message: Ok. I have a prob. And I have looked at alot of postings and still no true idea. Today after I installed a round air filter on the top of my '98 V6 TB and drove it 30 miles and restarted it, both the Abs &Brake lights came on and have stayed on. I reset the computer 3 times and nothing. So can anyone help?

Message: I just came home from work,I almost hit 3 deer at once, slaming on my brakes and locking all 4 up. When I left work , my abs and brake light came on as my speed increased. Also I tried to set my cruise and the light comes on but wont set. Would the abs sensor do this to the cruise too? And if so after I replace the sensor, how do I reset the computer? Its a 99 sport 5.2, and I'll take all the .02 cents I can get. Thanks

Message: Ok, after an hour I searched the posts and found my trouble to be the switch by the break peddal. I pushed it in and let it snap out a few times and tried it out. I had my cruise right away and my break lights didnt come on. This is probable only a fix if your cruise doesnt work,if it does I would check the speed sensor on your rear pumpkin.

Message: I've got a '98 V6. The thing id, it jsut started doing it out of nowhere. I drove about a 1/2 hour to a place, and then when I started it back up it did it. I have no idea, but will check the pedal, if no luck, might as well take it in and have it looked at.

Message: Alreight, here is the deal. I changed the air "hat" to a round air filter, reset the computer and it was o.k. Then when I left a shop that I went to, the lights came on. Not till the next day did I even notice the speedo only regesturing from 20mph. and up. So, from what I have read on here, I think it's the sensor. But, just so I don't f' around and waste money,I
m going to go ahead and go to the shop and let them find out.

Message: It's the sensor on top of the differential. It serves as both the speed sensor for the speedometer/odometer and as the ABS sensor for the rear brakes.
It's actually a frequence generator (uses a magnetic pickup to pulse a fixed DC voltage applied across the sensor leads) that feeds into the CAB (Controller Anti-lock Brakes.) The CAB uses the it to detect rear wheel lock during braking (i.e. loss of pulses) and uses the actual frequence of the pulses (in conjunction with the axle ratio & tire Rotations Per Mile data) to calculate the speed/mileage data it sends to the PCM to drive the speedometer/odometer.
Because it performs double duty, the "sure" symptom the sensor's gone bad, in addition to the ABS & Brake trouble lights coming on of course) is the speedometer stops functioning below 20 mph. This happens because the system is setup to use the transmission's output speed sensor as a "back-up" speed/mileage sensor if the rear speed sensor isn't working properly and "that" sensor doesn't get to a high enough output level to be used this way until vehicle speed is above 20mph.
