Subject: Clutch problems, anyone else had this??
IP: Logged

Message:
Well, im not sure what the hell happened but coming home last night i was getting off the freeway and went to depress the clutch and no resitance what so ever. so i cussed a little being that it was 2:30 in the morning. i turned off the truck and tried to start in gear to get it going, wasnt happening, so turned it off and put it in reverse and got it off the road and called my friend for a tow. We took it to the dealer cause i have the extend warranty. they tell me that my clutch has disenagraded(great spelling huh).

So has anyone else had the same problem. my clutch was fine on the way over and half the way back, then bam it was just gone. it didnt feel funny at all or anything. they say its not covered cause the clutch is normal wear and tear, but for it to be there then not, that is not normal, i only have 44000 miles on my truck, and i really dont drive it that hard

so im pissed of course and there is no way im paying 750 to fix it, ill freeze my butt off in the driveway first

but has anyone else had any problems like this?

I think they are giving you a load of crap,it disentegrated? no noise no nothing,if you have no pedal pressure,it would eother be the slave cylinder or the clutch master cylinder or a leak somewhere,is the clutch master cylinder full of fluid? The pressure plate is what gives the resistance and if that blew apart you would know it.

I drove the truck that same day, and it was just fine. He said that when he came off of the freeway, he had downshifted to 3rd, and when he went to push in the clutch to stop, no pressure. Then, when he shut-off the rig and put it in gear to start it and move it, it wouldn't move in 1st, but it did in reverse. Then, he tried to push on the clutch again, and there was resistance again, but now, no matter what gear you are in, it acts like the clutch is disenguaged. I checked the fluid, and it is full, as a matter of fact, at the time, there was a fresh spill of fluid out of the resivoir! It just doesn't make any sense. It first sounds like the sale or master cylinder, but then it sounds like it is the clutch disk or pressure plate. The dealer said they put it up on the lift and there is clutch material coming out of the bellhousing vent holes. We are going to pick it up tonight, and we will pull it when shiftrider can afford a new clutch.

My girlfreind has a 2000 3.9 Dakota that just had to have the clutch replaced. She was driving down the road and it just started to give out. 46,000 miles. She made it to her destination but when she went to leave, there was no way the truck was going to move. Had to have it towed. Midas was close and they quoted a good price over the phone, but when she got it there, they said it was a "special" clutch and had to be ordered from the manufacturer for $600. I have followed up on this and have no good reason for the clutch to cost that much. She even paid next day shipping. I am writing to the franchise headqurters about this and hope to get some of her money back. But why should a clutch go out after 46000 mi? Crappy parts. What did you pay for the clutch replacement?

My stock clutch went out at 23000 mi. The dealer wouldnt fix under waranty. So I paid 340 for my CenterForce Dual Friction clutch w/ ThrowOut Bearing. You dont have to buy the OEM clutch which they probably markup to twice the price.

Lots of Dakotas have lost their clutches due to disintegration. The organic clutch disk is just a piece of crap from the factory. Most of the time what happens is that the organic outer facing just completely breaks free of the steel center hub where the splines are.

Here's a list of people that I know who've shattered their clutches:

1. Matt Barret.... broken disc hub
2. Kicker01.... broken disc hub
3. cudashoe.... broken disc hub
4. Duner..... shredded the facing off the disc
5. SY KB 01 (from dakotatrucks.com).... shredded the facing off the disc
6. Shiftrider.... shredded facing, most likely

There are others, but I can't remember off hand.
Here's a break down of those people's rides:
1. Matt Barret.... 150+ launches on slicks with a highly modded 4.7
2. Kicker01.... launching his modded 4.7 while testing KRC parts
3. cudashoe..... highly modded 4.7
4. Duner.... running 14 psi of boost with his turbo'd 4.7, just too much torque in 4th gear
5. SY KB 01.... running 7 psi of boost from his KB supercharged 4.7, too much torque in 3rd gear
6. Shiftrider.... no idea on mods or driving style....

To be honest, with all the launches I have on slicks (and my 66,000 miles) I am surprised that I haven't joined the club already. I think that will happen during the 2003 racing season for me, though.... I am prepared to buy a clutch soon.

Anyhow.... it seems to be the clutch that Dodge has chosen to install behind the 4.7 motors just has a crappy organic disc. Whether the facing burns off the disc or the hub just shatters, it's a piece of crap. If you drive your 4.7/5-spd hard, you better be prepared to get bucks-up for a new clutch sooner or later.

Wasn't Duners a DUAL FRICTION CenterForce when it let go. Besides all makes of manual transmissions have problems.I only paid 260 for a CenterForce 2 clutch and Pressure Plate and Throwout Bearing.600 hundred bones is hard to swallow. I could understand 400-450 installed but 600 is outrageuos. But then a again My Wife Accord SRS module went out and the list price for it was 717 dollars plus 75 dollar install but the dealer cut me a break since I used to work at the Dealership 550 installed. I was like well when a HONDA breaks it eat your @$$ good but that a different story.

my clutch got a lil crack in it a month ago so it could still drive up to about 10mph max, and usually make a really loud grinding noise. i have a 97 5.2L v8 reg cab 5spd w/ 65k miles. so the next day i drove it 5 miles to my brothers house. then took his car to pepboys, bought an autospecialites clutch kit for 199.99 plus 6.00 for a bottle of tranny fluid. we did the installation in about 5 hours. also had to pick up a new Mopar tranny rubber mount for 60.00 (ouch) b/c the original one shredded. so 266.00 and it drives better then ever. only thing i would do different is buy the entire ENERGY SUSPENSION bushings kit that includes the tranny mount for 120.00. so for double what i paid, i could have almost every single bushing in my suspension new.

Now ya gotta remember, the stock clutch is ment for normal driving, not competition. If you pound you truck, it would be wise to upgrade it to a better after market unit. My '94 has 90K on the orginal clutch. It starting to have a little chatter when its cold so I guess I'll throw a new one in soon. When you replace it, do the job right. Remove the flywheel and have it checked to make sure it is flat and there aren't any cracks. Just to be sure, have it surfaced. Its also a good time to replace the pilot bushing.

I have a 99 Dakota and with 60,000 miles when the clutch just decinagrates and leaves me stranded. It drove fine to my destination when on the way back it just stopped pulling!! The worse part is I told the dealership about some noise I had been hearing. They said it was normal noise. SO I guesse they were wrong! Oh and I don't push my truck either I drive normal. But dodge does need to check this problem out. I have owned several chevys and ford with manuals and never once had this to happen.

I have almost 90k on my truck and have not had any problems yet with the trans. I have the AX15, and it has a little choppy (very little) going into gear when it is cold out. I have been told that all AX15's are like this.

Has anyone ever replaced the clutch in an AX15, and if so, what does it intail, other than the office removal of the trans and drive shaft.

I just had a problem where my clutch gave way as well. However, it appears that it is not the clutch at all, but the actuator (not sure if that is the correct terminology) where the clutch pedal engages with the mastercylinder. As I pushed on the pedal, the thing just popped and the pedal went to the floor. Upon examination, I found a snap ring that holds the entire mechanism on to the firewall had come off. Now when I try to reinstall it, it won't stay on. Now it is off to the dealer to have it repaired. Any others seen this before?

Hello,

I have been experiencing clutch problems with my 2000 Dakota 4x4 3.9L. My problem is intermitent some days I can shift and others I can not. Indicators are that the pressure plate is not releasing. There are no apparent leaks or noises other than no disegagement of throw out bearing.
I have currently 125,000 miles on mine.
