Subject: Recall on 1999 Dakotas
IP: Logged

Message:
Just read this in the Columbus Dispatch , Saturday , June 30 2001.
"DaimlerChrysler Corp. is recalling 161,682 light trucks that do not comply with federal seat-belt standards. The recalled vehicles include 1999 models of the Dodge Dakota,Durango,Ram,Intrepid and Caravan;Chrysler Concorde,LHS, and Town And Country; and the Jeep Grand Cherokee."
Dont feel bad, Ford is recalling 159,645 vans with fuel tanks that can crack and leak fuel, effecting 1997-2001 e150,e250 and e350.
Look at it this way,at least we wont blow up!
All kidding aside,PLEASE GET THEM FIXED,none of you need a trip through the windshield!

I bought a 1999 dodge dakota ex cab this year, it is an r title but it runs great. It has 26,020 miles. I have noticed the late shifting. It dose not do it all the time. the only thing I have to really complain about is the gas milage. I have the 3.9 liter V6 and its horrible on gas. It's 4wd but it sucks in the snow and I have brand new winter tires on it.I had a 1996 dakota and it was a tank.It would go through anything.Over all the 1999 dakota is a great truck.

not neccesarily true on daks not blowing up. The early in the model run year '97s have been recalled for having the fuel line rubbing on the chassis and wearing a hole in the line till it leaks.

We recently got rid of our 1999 dodge durango. We to had troubles with ball joints, wheel bearings, back latch rusted so it wouldnt open( I did get it open and cleaned rust off got it operatable, and we also had a front wheel, hub, entire assembly come completly off at the frame in which I crashed in to another vehicle. The officer ticketed me for not keeping right. I new something went wrong prior to the colision but had no proof.

My 99 Dakota 4x4 with the V6 ( only 32,000 mi )has a cracked Exhaust Manifold Stud and all the remaining are siezed up. The original sound was that of a sticking lifter, but after opening the Hood we found the real problem. Has anybody had this problem, as it appears to be a dissimular meatals problem.

If you will look around this website, you will see that this subject has been discussed often already. There is plenty of information here about a coming recall of ball joints on Durangos.

I also own a 99 Durango, I have been hearing ALOT about possible recalls for Ball joints, tie rod ends, transmission seals, window motors. I have had new brakes put on 3 times, only once again for the Calipers to start making a clicking noise, they have tried to explain to me that this is normal! Also, I have had a terrible front end noise for several weeks,I have taken it in several times, only to be told there is nothing wrong.Of course blaming it on the shocks (which are new). Also, I have had to replace the tranmission seals twice. I have contacted Dodge about all of these troubles, only to be told they are checking into this problems, but still no recall has been done. Beings that I only have about 6000 miles left on my EXTENDED WARRANTY,I am not sure what I will do, all I can say is this is the first car I have EVER bought an extended warranty for, and VERY thankful I did! Once again my dream car goes back into the shop again today, to have the so-called bad shocks checked out.hmmm How much you want to bet it isn't the shocks? Good Luck All, seems Dodge had better get on the ball, and get the SUV's fixed for people, before they don't sell any!!!

I have a automatic transmission problem in my 1999 Dakota. It will not shift into gear on time. Took it in an they didn't notice it at first. A private mechanic doing bodywork made the diagnosis. I am taking it in again to give them another chance since I'm still on warranty.

I have a 99 Dakota Sport 6 cyl. 37000 miles. There is a squeking noise coming from some of the suspension parts whenever I go over a bump. I've taken my truck to the mechanic and I was told that nothing can be done about it. Has anyone else had this problem? If so please let me know how to fix it. Thanks in advance. By the way, I do enjoy driving my Dakota and have had people stop and tell me what a nice vehicle it is. It would be great if it would stop squeking though.

I don't know much about the Dakotas but, I took a good screwin on a 2001 Durango SLT. No leather or instrument package, power passenger seat or heated mirrors, which in NH you really need. It came fully equipped with $5.00 windshield wipers and the worst tires on the market. All for only $34,600.00. Thank god it's a lease. $433.00 a month for 4 years and at the end of the lease I can buy this gem for only $14.500.00. WOW. what a deal. I had it a month when it had a recall because when parked on a hill the transmissions were slipping into neutral, 3 months later the air conditioner went, 3 months after that, the rear hatch wouldn't open. the mechanism needed to be replaced. 5 months after that, the paint started peeling off the hood, a month after that, I took it to the high pressure car wash and blew the protective coating off the rims. Shortly after,a front shock blew. At 21,000 miles the rotors were rusted from the inside out. They covered all the items except for the rotors which were $500.00. It was clear that the rotors were junk metal. Now a friend that is a mechanic for Dodge tells me that the wheel bearings and ball joints are junk in all the Durangos. Thats a nice feeling knowing that my wife and kids could be on the highway and have the front end fall apart. I can't even get rid of this beauty because I am so upside down in it, due to the screwin I took on the price. Wear your seatbelts all you Durango owners. I'm sure it's one hell of a ride when your front end falls apart at 65 mph. And oh, I forgot to tell you. Don't park near any apple trees. An apple falling on the hood makes one hell of a dent. I guess Ram tough only applies to the trucks.

I have a 99 SLT CC with the same problem, I discovered that the upper control arm bushings were mostly gone, they had rotted and fallen apart. I'm almost positive that that is what is causing the squeaks, annoying as hell I know but still haven't gotten around to replacing them. The bushings are only like $15 per side but you have to take the control arms to an auto machine shop so that the bushings can be pressed into place, and I find it hard to drive my truck to a machine shop with the control arms removed. There is a special tool available though for the removal and installation of the bushings, you may want to see if you can rent it somewhere. I took it to the dealership and they replaced the sway bar bushings, morons, I told them 'Upper control arm bushings!"
