my instrument cluster is acting up all the needles shake when im driving down the road, then their normal then they start back up again. i hope its not the cluster.

My wife has owned her '99 dakota for 4 years now. It's a '99 V-6 with 98,000 miles. So far the water pump has been replaced twice(but works fine for the last 15,000 mi). But recently a rattling/grinding type noise from the engine has developed when you start it up, then stops, and starts again while accelerating. ALso has trouble changing between 2nd and 3rd gear (rpms shoot up and have to let off so it will switch). AND!!!! there is a popping type noise in the rear end! Don't know if it may be sway bar or just the rear end going out, but ANYONE that maybe be able to give a few pointers on what ANY of these problems may be PLEASE HELP!!!! Thanks!

sounds like tranny is going out - if you're lucky you just need some fluid or the bands tightened. but it doesn't sound good.

For the not wanting to shift from 2nd to 3rd issue, replace your tranny filter and add some of that lucas tranny crap. If you are lucky it will do the trick, it worked for my 99 5.9 dak

I wish there was a recall on the truck. I have a 99 4x4 sport V6. Whats amazing is that ive done all the work and research. Ive read ALL of the posts and have Replaced 80% of the items in question. The 2 biggies are the front end and the tranny. Ive discovered the front end alignment is critical for the wear on the upper and lower ball joints, wheel bearings(toe and camber), and inner/outer tie rods. be careful to not get it aligned with problems with these. A quick way to check if the lower ball joint is bad is to jack the suspect wheel 1 inch off the ground and put the jack handle under the wheel and lift.if it moves up and down easily..its bad. no amount of lube will fix it. The tranny not shifting is the filter and fluid. regular changes around every 30k miles will prevent it. The abs light and brake light is the sensor on the rear differential... the water pump is cheap. Price one on a mazda. Ive made it a point to wash/spray the crap off the underside of the bed and wipe out the doorjams any time i wash the truck. Guess what.. no rust. I have noticed the muffler shield(on the OEM muffler) has come loose several times and rubs the driveshaft. i removed it and no more noise. there is adequate clearance around it to not heat anything. heres the kicker..i have 168488 miles on the truck and it still chirps the tires when i pull out of the driveway,and It still looks new. If any one replaced the front brakes and rotors for over 100 bucks you got ripped off. Go to a parts store and price the parts..they are cheap. if you can change a tire you can change the brakes and rotors. once the front wheel is off you are just 2 bolts away from removing/ replacing these items. you dont have to bleed the brakes. just pop the brake resevoir cap before you put the new pads in place..this pushes the fluid back into the resevoir once you compress the caliper.I hope these little things helped. I love my truck..it has been good to me and ITS A TRUCK...good luck..

I own a 99 dakota 4 about 2yrs now, with 155,000 miles on it now, x-cab,6cyl, 4x4, manual tranny (no probl. in that dept. so far) I've had all these problems, like the water pump, ball joints, wheel bearings, O2 sensors (both), and tention pully, and have corrected them too, for the time being. I do have a problem which I can not figure out, my fog lights. Has anyone found out why they quit working and how to get them fixed? I've bought new replacements 4 them but they still do not work. Any suggestions?

Try the headlight switch, it was about $70 at the dealership and easy to change.

I have a 99 sport club cab with 118,000, and pretty much had all of the above. Also had the transmission pan rust thru around 85,000 and the fuel filler neck go porous (dripping gas on my foot when refueling) when gas hit $3.00/gal.
Latest problem is at 9 years of age and 118,000 miles THE FRAME IS SHOT. Right rail split open on inner face on either side of transmission cross member. It passed inspection in August I was under it in september nothing visible (was coming from the inside out) Dealer say not repairable need to replace frame no new frames available from the factory. Waiting for response from Dodge (frame should last at least 10 years one would think. Don't think I should have to scour the junk yards looking for a better frame (dealers suggestion)
Anybody else have this problem?? (maybe you all better look real good).

My girlfriend has a 99 dakota sport and the exact same problems occurred. The popping noise when u hit a bump....that was our sway bar link....it broke... we only paid 120 to fix both sides and have them installed...and this truck has like over 170k....also the gear problem have the same problem and we put a rebuilt trasmission in it for frickin 2200.00 and now it is having the same problem again....and the rattling is happening too...that is still doing it and we havent figured it out yet...ALSO ABOUT THE TRANSMISSION...ok so after we had the mechanic put the rebuilt in maybe a week later it would make this like grinding sound like the gears were literally grinding when we went in reverse after the truck sat all nite....after a little bit it would stop til the next morning or whatever...and now the mechanic says nothing is wrong but it might be our o2 sensors!! ARE U FRICKIN KIDDING ME!!! and that they wont fix anything because it is not covered under the warranty but yet it is because the transmission is the problem...i dunno but I AM REALLY FRUSTRATED WITH THIS TRUCK AND THAT MECHANIC!!!!IF ANYONE HAS ANY SOLUTIONS OR IDEAS LET ME KNOW...

MY 99 DAKOTA R/T started cutting out while driving but only when the tack gets in the range of 2,000-2,200 then cuts out . it dosent stall and as long as tack is under 2,000 will drive just fine . any ideas on this would be lifesaver thank's for any help offered

Smurf; Are you sure you have the right
fluid/lubricant in the tranny? I had an older with
a new process tranny and it used atf. I do't know
about the newer ones.

i have a 98 dakcubcab replaced all rubber frnt end
pads shoes regular maintence now after my 98 was
hit by a non thinking individual,i have to swput
5.2 ina 02 dakcubcab3.9 litr... will b a task only
replacing pcm 2 injector wires fan shroud ... my
question is will other parts
be compatible from body lights etc///
